A Look Inside BeHere / 1942 at OMCA
Can looking closely at photographs change what we see, know, and feel about history? Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata explores this question through immersive installations, historic photographs, and augmented reality (AR) experiences that bring visitors into the moments of 1942—before Japanese Americans in Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles were forcibly incarcerated during World War II.
Created by the Yanai Initiative at UCLA and presented at the Japanese American National Museum in 2022, OMCA’s presentation features new Bay Area elements, including installations drawn from Dorothea Lange’s photographs of Oakland and San Francisco, a new three-screen video featuring local residents, and an AR experience in Oak Street Plaza.
Experience the interactive augmented reality installation at the Oakland Museum of California and explore a new lens on Japanese American history, photography, and incarceration during World War II.
