Member Preview for Black Spaces: Reclaim & Remain July 17 from 11:00 am 4:30 pm

You’re invited to the Member Opening for OMCA’s newest exhibition! Black Spaces: Reclaim & Remain navigates the braided histories of displacement, resistance, and resilience within Black American communities in Oakland and the East Bay. Through works from the OMCA permanent collection alongside new commissions by artist Adrian Burrell; architect June Grant with blinkLAB architecture; and the Archive of Urban Futures with Moms 4 Housing, the exhibition traces how Black communities have creatively resisted dispossession and reimagined spaces of home and belonging. Reserved tickets are highly encouraged but not required for Member Preview Hours.

Don’t miss a show-stopping performance by The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol & Her Sextet, an ensemble led by the legendary Bay Area vocalist whose career spans over six decades. From jazz and blues to funk and soul, Faye Carol’s powerhouse vocals and magnetic presence light up the stage, where every note is a celebration of Black musical traditions and community resilience.

Spotlight Sundays: I Was There Too: A Performance by Meres-Sia Gabriel, Child of the Black Panther Party Revolution July 20 from 1:00 pm 2:30 pm

I Was There Too is a unique multimedia performance about one woman’s inner revolution as she struggles to understand what it means to have been born into the Black Panther Party. Daughter of two Black Panthers (Emory Douglas and Gayle Dickson), Meres-Sia Gabriel shares a first-hand account of what it was like to grow up in a revolution that changed the course of history.

The annual CAMMY Award recognizes extraordinary museum supporters, professionals, and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to California museums. OMCA is elated to announce that this year, CAM has recognized one of our very own, Executive Director and CEO, Lori Fogarty! This award highlights her dedicated leadership throughout her extensive career, including within her role of nearly two decades at OMCA, an institution that centers community engagement, field innovation, and a commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded OMCA one of only six recipients of the 2022 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries making significant and exceptional contributions to their communities.
