Oakland Museum of California Announces Free Field Trips for OUSD Schools
Oakland, CA — 9月 2, 2025 — The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is deepening its commitment to Oakland students by offering free field trips to all classes in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)—which serves nearly 34,000 students—for the next three school years (2025-26; 2026-27; and 2027-28). Alongside this expanded access, OMCA is doubling its transportation scholarships to help schools get to the Museum, and is broadening its student programs to better align with classroom learning and curriculum. These efforts would not be possible without the generous support of The Daryl Lillie Fund for Oakland Students and other OMCA donors.
OMCA is a vital resource for local educators and students. In the 2024–25 school year, OMCA served more than 22,000 students, teachers, and chaperones from over 700 different classes, through guided field trips, self-directed visits, and live performances. Now, with these expanded initiatives, OMCA will reduce barriers and welcome more students into the Museum.
For 2025-26, field trip programs include:
- Three guided gallery visits to choose from, including Art Speaks Loud (grades 2-5); Becoming California (grades 4-8); and Changing California (grades 3-6), a new program in the Gallery of Natural Sciences.
- Two performance series, returning by popular demand during Día de los Muertos and Black History Month.
- Self-guided visits and new high-capacity field trip days during special exhibitions.
Additionally, OMCA is enhancing its work with teachers and school partners. Efforts include two annual Teacher Nights and a new cohort of Teacher Fellows. The Museum is also developing new curriculum resources, including a Native California curriculum framework and teacher resources connected to OMCA’s special exhibitions, including Black Spaces: Reclaim & Remain, Good Fire: Tending Native Lands, among others.
“Field trips help learning come to life, spark curiosity, and foster empathy, perspective-taking, critical thinking, and appreciation of diversity. At OMCA, we believe every Oakland student deserves these opportunities,” said Mary Ann Bonet Guardia, OMCA’s Senior Director, Learning, Experience & Programming. “By removing barriers to participation and providing new resources for teachers and schools, we hope to empower students with a critical understanding of their community and ways we can work together towards positive change.”
“These initiatives would not be possible without the generosity of OMCA donors, especially Daryl and John Lillie,” said Katy Wafle, OMCA’s Senior Director of Philanthropy. Generous donors are funding the first three years of this program, and OMCA is seeking additional funding to secure the program in perpetuity. “The Daryl Lillie Fund for Oakland Students is opening doors for thousands of Oakland students to experience the wonder and inspiration of OMCA’s incredible resources.”To register for field trips, apply for bus and BART scholarships, and learn more about school programs, visit www.museumca.org/learn.
