OMCA is proud to host a 星期五 Night rooted in the spirit of reparations and African liberation in collaboration with the Brotherhood of Elders Network’s Bese Saka Initiative, East Bay Community Foundation’s ASCEND: BLO, The San Francisco Foundation, Spearitwurx, and the Sara Webster Fabio Center for Social Justice.

This powerful evening will feature soul-stirring freedom songs from Jenn Johns, Spear of the Nation, 42K Oakland, and the electrifying Young, Gifted & Black Spoken Word Collective. Expect surprise performances, film screenings, and more as you explore a vibrant marketplace showcasing Black-made art, products, and healing-centered activations. This family-friendly event, guided by love, joy, and the unstoppable spirit of liberation, invites all to come together in celebration of our culture, our stories, and our collective power.

While you immerse yourself in the spirit of the evening, Sketchboard Co. invites you to dive into your creativity with uninstructed Live Figure Drawing! It’s a perfect opportunity to create something personal and unique while soaking in the Museum’s atmosphere.

We welcome all skill levels, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes.  Since drawing will take place in the galleries, please be mindful of space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite, charcoal, or conté pencils.

Rounding out the experience, DJ OLGA T will take you on a vibrant musical journey blending Latin, Afrobeat, R&B, and Soulful House. With her unique sound and undeniable energy, DJ OLGA T will keep the dance floor alive, creating an unforgettable end to the evening.

星期五 Nights at OMCA also offer guests a well-rounded gallery experience with Gallery Chats. Unlike the traditional museum tour, Gallery Chats invites visitors to chat, ask questions, and connect with our OMCA facilitators, who combine content knowledge with lived experience to encourage meaningful dialogue and fresh interpretations of our exhibitions. Join us at OMCA for a meaningful evening of culture, creativity, and celebration.

Limited $10 flat rate parking for 星期五 Nights is available in the OMCA Garage until 10 pm. Learn more about getting to the museum.

Film Descriptions

I See No One But Me by Ryan Louie & Denzel Herrera-Davis:

In the vibrant heart of Oakland, powerful transformation unfolds regularly. ‘Drop The Act,’ a dynamic six-week course designed for Black Men by a Black man, emerges as a crucible of change. It’s not just a course; it’s an expedition, a voyage of self-exploration and reclamation that defies societal expectations. Duration: 24 minutes.

I Am Hope directed by Shaka Jamal

An insightful documentary about a resilient community coming together to create the first yoga and mindfulness class in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Middle Schools. Working collaboratively with staff and administration, yoga instructor Shaka Jamal develops strong relationships with youth who are receiving their first in-school instruction of yoga and mindfulness. Through a challenging school year, students are engaged in a range of mindfulness activities that transform them from mindful learners to mindful leaders. Duration: 64 minutes.

Evolutionary Blues…West Oakland’s Music Legacy directed by Cheryl Fabio

The blues is an earthy, soul-stirring mélange of roots music and personal narratives that became the defining soundtrack of Black America. Wherever Black people settled, that soundtrack took on a local flavor. In Northern California, the influences came from the musicianship of Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. Seventh Street in West Oakland supported and bolstered Black people who answered the call of the war effort in the late 1940s. Entrepreneurship created a fully contained community that provided work, homes, and all the necessities of life, including a fully developed music scene. Watch as more than 30 local musicians share their inspiration and describe the trajectory of the Oakland Blues; how it evolved and what it has become. Duration: 90 minutes.

It began in 2009 and primarily addresses the impacts of anti-Black racism through civic engagement, youth leadership development programs, racial healing and wellness workshops, multiracial alliances, and power-building services for Black-led organizations. Their work is focused in the Bay Area, but they also provide services throughout California.
