Take action locally on climate change in Oakland through art, community, and organizing at OMCA.

Program Schedule:

5–8 pm Off the Grid Service (10th Street)

5–9 pm Sustainability and Resilience with the City of Oakland  (Garden)

6–8  pm Extinction Rebellion (Garden)

6–8 pm Music by DJ Ron Reeser (Amphitheater)

OMCA hosts Extinction Rebellion (XR) and the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team to share how we can take action on climate change in Oakland through art, community, and organizing.

Extinction Rebellion invites you to screen print and paint climate justice designs, interact with their street theater performers and large puppets, which are often used at protest actions, and view climate visual art and performances meant to spark reflection, discussion and action. Learn how to get involved in the climate justice movement as well as local environmental stewardship in the Bay Area with XR and other partner organizations.

Sustainable Oakland will share how you can help the City of Oakland mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis in ways that improve racial equity across Oakland. The City’s 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan seeks to transition all buildings in Oakland to 100% electric by 2040, and residents are invited to shape how this will unfold. Meet the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team and discover how electrification improves home health and safety and what supportive services are available to help residents make the transition to an all-electric home.

Enjoy music by DJ Ron Reeser from 6 to 8 pm.

About the City’s Sustainability and Resilience Team

The team fosters collaboration with staff across all City Departments and with community leaders and experts on equitable climate change mitigation and adaptation.

About Extinction Rebellion (XR)

Extinction Rebellion, or XR for short, is a decentralized, international and politically non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

XR uses Nonviolent Direct Action (NVDA), otherwise known as civil disobedience, to put pressure on the government to act on climate change. We see NVDA as the only remaining tactical option, as our government has continuously failed at legal and conventional means to make the needed changes to avert mass catastrophe. Nonviolent action attracts attention to our movement, disrupts business as usual, and puts authorities in an ethical dilemma.

XR is a grassroots organization powered by regular people. We don’t believe that hierarchical structures of organization are a best practice in achieving our goals. Everyone is welcome!

XR San Francisco Bay Area works in small semi-autonomous groups, which generally fall under two categories: affinity groups and working groups.
