Barriletes

Recommended for ages 4+
Estimated time: 15 minutes

In Guatemala, the flight of the giant barriletes (kites) is part of the Days of the Dead tradition on November 2. In two particular towns, Sacateqequéz and Sumpango, giant kites, as big as twenty-three feet across, are created using colored tissue paper and bamboo. Families gather in the cemeteries, and after tending to the gravesites with offerings of food and flowers, kites are flown to send messages to the heavens.
