Special Guest Gallery Chat: Exploring BeHere/ 1942 with Margaret Yee

November 7 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Admission ticket required

Join us in our latest special exhibition, BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration, for a special walkthrough with museum educator and Gallery Chats facilitator Margaret Yee.

Margaret will explore media representation and the impact of the language used to describe this historical moment as she guides visitors through this powerful artist’s rendition, centering the augmented reality (AR) components of the show. In this exhibition, creator and Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata enlarges and activates images by Dorothea Lange and Russell Lee, who documented the forced incarceration, encouraging visitors to look more closely at the emotions of each subject and the power dynamics at play between the photographer behind the camera and the people in front of it.

Concluding the talk, Margaret will share a poetry exercise highlighting the poem “Evacuation” by Mitsuye Yamada. Please join us for this deeper look into the history behind this amazing exhibition.

About Margaret Yee:

Margaret Yee has been volunteering at OMCA since 2017, first as a docent in the Gallery of California History and now as a School Programs and Gallery Chats Facilitator. A former high school teacher and museum educator, Margaret enjoys doing Gallery Chats because she loves the OMCA community and always learns something new from every conversation she has with a visitor.
