OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA CELEBRATES THE LUNAR NEW YEAR AND OTHER ASIAN TRADITIONS

(OAKLAND, CA) December 17, 2012-Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a day of Asian New Year traditions at the Oakland Museum of California on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 12 to 4:30 pm. Featuring activities for the entire family, the 12th annual celebration honors California’s diversity and celebrates the many time-honored traditions of Asian communities. The event is included with Museum admission.

The day’s performances include: a Malaysian 24 Seasons drumming; the Red Panda Acrobats and Oakland Youth Orchestra String Quartet; martial arts and Chinese yo-yo demonstrations; and traditional lion and dragon dances. The lineup includes dazzling illusions by The Magic of Jade; stunning Balinese dancers; and sing-a-long songs in English, Mandarin, and Spanish with Miss Janet the Planet and Uncle Charlie. Hands-on activities include Tibetan prayer flag and New Year ‘lucky money’ red envelope making, and face painting with Chinese Opera artists. Demonstrations include: Japanese mochi pounding with Kagami Kai; Vietnamese spring roll making; mahjong lessons from Sara Levy Linden; and a dance lesson for the viral hit ‘Gangnam Style’ by UC Berkeley’s Korean Performance Group.
