Kicking off the 2025 Friday Nights season with high-energy beats\, colorful performances\, and an immersive cultural celebration\, NSB brings the vibrant rhythms of Punjab\, India\, to life. Dance lessons\, live drumming\, and DJ sets will keep the energy flowing all night long\, making it the perfect release for the whole family to enjoy. \n\n\n\nIn celebration of Fairyland’s 75th anniversary and the opening of Fairyland @ 75: A Legacy of Magic near the Gallery of California Natural Sciences\, OMCA also hosts a special puppet-making activity\, offering a creative way for families to engage with this beloved Oakland institution. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children and adults alike to craft their own whimsical creations inspired by the magic of Fairyland.  \n\n\n\nDJ mare.e.fresh will keep the vibe eclectic and exciting\, spinning a mix of Cumbia\, R&B\, Disco\, and more. Over the past 20 years\, NSB has produced\, collaborated\, and performed at over 1\,000 events across museums\, festivals\, performing arts centers\, nightclubs\, and landmark venues—including the Oakland Museum of California—while building community and fostering cross-cultural connections. \nIn 2023\, NSB co-launched Bhangra & Beats Night Market\, the largest outdoor cultural destination for South Asian arts in the Bay Area\, voted San Francisco’s Best Night Market (Editor’s Pick\, 48 Hills)\, received two Certificates of Honor from the city of San Francisco and co-presented the city’s first official Diwali celebration. \n\n				\n				\n            \n\n        \n\n    \n	\n        \n            \n\n			\n            \n				\n				                    About DJ mare.e.fresh\n				\n				                    mare.e.fresh is a DJ  and producer based out of the Bay Area. Join Johnson as he shares the collaborations and partnerships that brought Aguilar’s remarkable photographic collection to OMCA\, resulting in this impactful display.  \n\n\n\nExplore the creative process behind the project and discover how these photographs reflect the vibrancy\, resilience\, and rich cultural heritage of Native communities in California. His many exhibitions at the Museum include Capturing Light: Masterpieces of California Photography\, 1850 – 2000\, Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California\, and Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing which traveled to venues in Europe and the United States. Among his duties is stewardship and public sharing of the Dorothea Lange Archive\, which holds more than 6\,000 vintage prints and 40\,000 negatives\, along with personal correspondence\, field notes\, proof sheets\, and working documents from the artist. His publications include Silver & Gold: Cased Images of the California Gold Rush and the award-winning exhibition catalog for Capturing Light. Join us for an unforgettable day in OMCA’s outdoor garden\, filled with games\, hands-on activities\, and a live Eco Hip Hop performance by DJ Cavem that will bring the beat to the garden of resistance rooted in culture\, climate action\, and community love. There will also be a traditional ritualist blessing and offering of prayer dances by Danza Azteca Cuauhtonal. This free event\, in partnership with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) teachers and students\, celebrates sustainability and environmental themes with arts\, sciences\, and local culture\, all working towards a greener future for the Bay Area. Voices of all ages will be featured\, making it an inclusive\, fun\, and meaningful way to connect with the Earth and each other. \n\n\n\nWhile getting in touch with the Earth\, we encourage you to delve into your creativity with Sketchboard Co. Live Figure Drawing! It’s a perfect opportunity to create something personal and unique while soaking in the Museum’s atmosphere. Sketchboard Co. Live Figure Drawing occurs inside our galleries and requires a Museum ticket to participate. \n\n\n\nWe welcome all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the galleries\, please be mindful of space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite\, charcoal\, or conté pencils. \n\n\n\nDJ Teao Sense will close out the day with a cross-genre journey of global slaps\, live percussion\, and turntablism. Having performed at the Obama White House\, been featured in Oprah Magazine and on the Rachael Ray Show\, Dr. Ietef “DJ Cavem” Vita has become known as more than just a rapper—he is an activist\, educator\, and vegan chef. Our intentions are to practice and share indigenous rituals of dance and music from Mexico as well as to conserve with sacredness\, ceremonial practices that have been gifted by the ancestors to our elders and now to current generations. \n\n				\n				\n            \n\n        \n\n    \n	\n        \n            \n\n			\n            \n				\n				                    About DJ Teao Sense:\n				\n				                    DJ Teao Sense is currently dwelling in Oakland\, Huichin Ohlone territory. Born and raised in the Bay Area\, Teao Sense is a visionary DJ\, multi-instumentalist\, producer\, educator\, and founder of the international artist collective\, Audiopharmacy Prescriptions. Fresh out of high school\, Teao went from selling his first cassette tapes and CDs in the streets of SF to performing internationally at an early age. This thought-provoking panel discussion features two dynamic Native creatives: Oakland-based Coharie and Nahua photographer Ashley Salaz and Mvskoke photographer\, scholar\, and filmmaker Haley Day Rains. Moderated by Drew Johnson\, OMCA Curator of Photography & Visual Culture\, the conversation will explore how photography serves as a vital tool for storytelling\, cultural preservation\, and community connection.This program is part of the exhibition Born of the Bear Dance: Dugan Aguilar’s Photographs of Native California—on view through June 2025—and draws on Dugan Aguilar’s legacy of documenting the vibrancy and resilience of Indigenous communities. The discussion will address key themes of representation\, reciprocity\, and the ways in which photography can be rooted in and shaped by community. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage in this meaningful conversation.  \n\n\n\n\ngeneral TICKETS\n\n\n\nMEMBER TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelist Bios\n\n\n\nAshley Salaz is an Indigenous storyteller living in the occupied Ohlone territory of Huchiun (Oakland\, CA). She is an enrolled member of the Coharie Tribe (North Carolina)\, but was born and raised in the urban sprawl of the East Bay Area. Ashley began photographing Indigenous people in California as a way to connect to a culture that she didn’t know growing up\, and to tell modern stories of the people who have tended to this land since time immemorial. \n\n\n\nAshley is a self-taught photographer and is passionate about photographing political actions in the Bay Area. She uses her medium to highlight Indigenous activism\, community work and kinship. Ashley has a keen eye for capturing raw emotion and an unromanticized authenticity of Native peoples through her photos. \n\n\n\nShe is currently shooting freelance photography as well as directing her first documentary short film about her tribe’s Native-run school and the lasting effects of its closure on the community. \n\n\n\nHaley Day Rains (Mvskoke) is an exhibiting and published photographer\, scholar\, filmmaker\, and current UC President’s/Andrew Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Film and Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz. She earned her Ph.D. in Native American Studies at the University of California\, Davis. Haley’s research and creative practice center on cultural and economic self-determination in historically underrepresented and underserved communities. \n\n\n\nDrew Heath Johnson is Curator of Photography & Visual Culture at the Oakland Museum of California\, where he has worked since 1989. His many exhibitions at the Museum include Capturing Light: Masterpieces of California Photography\, 1850 – 2000\, Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California\, and Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing which traveled to venues in Europe and the United States. Among his duties is stewardship and public sharing of the Dorothea Lange Archive\, which holds more than 6\,000 vintage prints and 40\,000 negatives\, along with personal correspondence\, field notes\, proof sheets\, and working documents from the artist. His publications include Silver & Gold: Cased Images of the California Gold Rush and the award-winning exhibition catalog for Capturing Light. Dos Four\, a dynamic fusion of Caribbean and Afro-Latin sounds\, will take the stage\, blending Salsa\, Cumbia\, Salsa Choque\, Latino House\, and more. Lead singer and songwriter Leyder Chapman\, originally from Cuba\, brings his passion for music to the Bay Area\, offering feel-good tunes for all ages. With his rich musical background and past success with the band SAOCO\, Dos Four continues to grow and deliver unforgettable performances. \n\n\n\nGet moving with an Intro to Disco class: Friday Night Fever! led by community activist\, dancer\, and creative\, Soulchild. Learn the fundamentals of rhythm\, technique\, and choreography\, while connecting with others in a lively and fun environment. \n\n\n\nDJ Fasho will keep the beats flowing with a mix of R&B\, Afro beats\, Reggae\, Pop\, and Reggaeton\, ensuring a high-energy atmosphere throughout the night. Unlike the traditional museum tour\, Gallery Chats invites visitors to chat\, ask questions\, and connect with our OMCA facilitators\, who combine content knowledge with lived experience to encourage meaningful dialogue and fresh interpretations of our exhibitions. Beer\, wine\, mixed and non-alcoholic drinks are available for sale. After grabbing a meal from a wide and weekly changing menu of culinary creations\, head to the OMCA Garden where you’ll find picnic tables and blankets to enjoy your local eats. Play lawn and table games\, enjoy weekly rotating Museum programming\, and create new memories at one of the Town’s most treasured spaces right in the heart of Oakland. \n\n\n\nNo outside alcohol permitted. Performances are subject to change. Lead singer and songwriter Leyder Chapman was born in Holguín\, Eastern Cuba and raised in Havana. Chapman’s talent for performing started at a young age and he wrote his first song\, “Yo Te Amo Verdad\,” at the age of fourteen. After arriving in Oakland\, he founded SAOCO\, a band specializing in the fusion of Cuban rhythms with popular Reggaeton. It was at this time that Chapman’s name as a musical artist\, Dos Four\, was formed. Along with several successful collaborations over the years\, Dos Four has been growing strong ever since. \n\n				\n				\n            \n\n        \n\n    \n	\n        \n            \n\n			\n            \n				\n				                    About DJ Fasho:\n				\n				                    DJ Fasho aka Craig Vick was born and raised in Oakland\, California. His love for music came at a young age\, listening to his mom’s jukebox and turntable in the 70s and 80s. DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth! at the Museum\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for Gallery Chats\, an opportunity to chat with and ask questions of our enthusiastic and knowledgeable OMCA Facilitators. Gallery Chats put a twist on the traditional museum tour by encouraging meaningful conversations and fresh interpretations to connect with the artwork\, artifacts\, and stories in our galleries. \n\n\n\nGallery Chats take place in our Special Exhibitions and our Galleries of California Art\, History\, and Natural Sciences every Saturday from 1 to 3 pm and are included with Museum and Special Exhibition admission.
