Leila has performed and run poetry workshops as the 2018 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate and her work has been published in Oprah Daily and The New York Times. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Shereen Marisol-Meraji\n \n Shereen Marisol Meraji is a veteran audio producer and journalist who has been telling stories with sound for more than two decades. During her time as co-host and senior producer\, Code Switch won numerous awards and Apple Podcasts named Code Switch its first-ever “show of the year.” Shereen’s currently an assistant professor of race in journalism and head of audio at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism\, educating the next generation of audio storytellers. Learn how to get involved in the climate justice movement as well as local environmental stewardship in the Bay Area with XR and other partner organizations.  \n\n\n\nSustainable Oakland will share how you can help the City of Oakland mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis in ways that improve racial equity across Oakland. The City’s 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan seeks to transition all buildings in Oakland to 100% electric by 2040\, and residents are invited to shape how this will unfold. Meet the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team and discover how electrification improves home health and safety and what supportive services are available to help residents make the transition to an all-electric home.  \n\n\n\nEnjoy music by DJ Ron Reeser from 6 to 8 pm.  \n\n\n\nAbout the City’s Sustainability and Resilience Team\n\n\n\nThe team fosters collaboration with staff across all City Departments and with community leaders and experts on equitable climate change mitigation and adaptation.  \n\n\n\nAbout Extinction Rebellion (XR)\n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion\, or XR for short\, is a decentralized\, international and politically non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.  \n\n\n\nXR uses Nonviolent Direct Action (NVDA)\, otherwise known as civil disobedience\, to put pressure on the government to act on climate change. We see NVDA as the only remaining tactical option\, as our government has continuously failed at legal and conventional means to make the needed changes to avert mass catastrophe. Nonviolent action attracts attention to our movement\, disrupts business as usual\, and puts authorities in an ethical dilemma.  \n\n\n\nXR is a grassroots organization powered by regular people. We don’t believe that hierarchical structures of organization are a best practice in achieving our goals. Apocalypse is a diverse group of young climate justice activists working together to lift the voices of youth\, in particular youth of color and working class youth. Their collective action aims to fight for a livable climate and an equitable\, sustainable\, and just world.  \n\n\n\nYVA started as a group of Oakland youth\, supported by adults in their community\, using direct action and lobbying to fight a proposed coal terminal in their city\, then expanded its focus to other climate justice issues. After a video with youth from YVA pushing Senator Feinstein to support the Green New Deal went viral\, YVA students organized press conferences\, gave interviews\, wrote Op Eds\, and developed a website. By September 2019\, YVA organized a crowd of 30\,000\, after working as a group to develop an intersectional set of targets and demands\, organizing transportation for thousands of students from around the Bay Area\, and connecting with dozens of labor and community groups\, many of whom took climate action for the first time. YVA youth have supported climate actions across the state\, taken leadership on local and statewide campaigns\, and continued their presence in national media. YVA was recently named by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as one of (and the only youth-led) YBCA 100. YVA is now a local group of young people who are impacting national conversations on climate. \n\n\n\nYVA expands and redefines who leads in the climate movement through peer-to peer community organizing that meets frontline young people where they are and supports their powerful\, strategic leadership\, whether they previously considered themselves “leaders” or “environmentalists” or not. This material speaks to Angela Davis’ story and the practice of preserving Black legacies more broadly. This discussion will delve into some of the challenges posed by social and institutional erasure and will consider ways to gather\, sustain\, and give life to Black material culture both tangible and intangible. The program will explore the multifaceted methods of memory work\, including documenting social movements\, objects as memory\, and strategies for keeping Black history alive.The panel includes activist and archivist Lisbet Tellefsen; Odette Pollar of Rainbow Sign\, a Black centered Bay Area cultural icon\, performance venue\, political organizing nexus and a legendary cafe; and Damien McDuffie\, founder and creative director of Black Terminus\, a creative studio and augmented reality platform for Black art and the Black cultural archive. Odette’s parents started The Rainbow Sign and she has inherited the artifacts and materials documenting this amazing institution.  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Damien McDuffie is a creative technologist\, digital archivist\, and developer primarily concerned with augmented reality (AR) art experiences. Influenced by Dr. Huey P. Her lyrical flow\, elastic voice\, and lush production intertwine into sonic experiences as natural as spring water: mesmerizing to behold\, sweet to drink from.About Beatnik ScumFollowing the release of “Death Coast”\, Beatnik organized an epic show for his fans at the Guild Theatre in Oak Park that consisted of lines out the doors\, Beatnik chants\, and sold out scum merchandise. A huge success\, this was just the beginning of Beatnik’s stage journey. \n\n\n\nOver the course of several months\, the local artist scene got wind of Beatnik Scum and he began performing at numerous venues in Sacramento’s Downtown scene. He then went on to host another show in August 2022\, selling out the Starlet Room @ Harlows performing his newest\, unreleased album “Inner Thoughts”.
