DESCRIPTION:Friday Nights at OMCA with Shanté | Nexus Black Art Week\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Guest Gallery Chat: Exploring BeHere/ 1942 with Margaret Yee\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in our latest special exhibition\, BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration\, for a special walkthrough with museum educator and Gallery Chats facilitator Margaret Yee. \n\n\n\nMargaret will explore media representation and the impact of the language used to describe this historical moment as she guides visitors through this powerful artist’s rendition\, centering the augmented reality (AR) components of the show. In this exhibition\, creator and Japanese artist Masaki Fujihata enlarges and activates images by Dorothea Lange and Russell Lee\, who documented the forced incarceration\, encouraging visitors to look more closely at the emotions of each subject and the power dynamics at play between the photographer behind the camera and the people in front of it. \n\n\n\nConcluding the talk\, Margaret will share a poetry exercise highlighting the poem “Evacuation” by Mitsuye Yamada. Please join us for this deeper look into the history behind this amazing exhibition. \n\n\n\n\nGet Museum Admission Tickets\n\n\n\nMember Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Margaret Yee:\n\n\n\nMargaret Yee has been volunteering at OMCA since 2017\, first as a docent in the Gallery of California History and now as a School Programs and Gallery Chats Facilitator. A former high school teacher and museum educator\, Margaret enjoys doing Gallery Chats because she loves the OMCA community and always learns something new from every conversation she has with a visitor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. TaikoPeace will close the day with an interactive performance of “Ei Ja Nai Ka\,” honoring Japanese American immigrant ancestors of this era and the echoes of their resistance through taiko\, dance\, and song. Come ready to learn\, engage\, and connect with one another! \n\n\n\nVisitors are invited to continue the conversation during a post-program Call to Action gathering. Her parents answered “No” to the so-called Loyalty Questionnaire and\, under duress\, renounced their American citizenship. She is co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity\, a project of Japanese American social justice advocates working to support front-line immigrant and refugee communities being targeted today. She is a community trauma consultant and author of The Poet and the Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love\, Imprisonment\, and Protest (Heyday Books 2024). She is Professor Emeritus at California State University\, Sacramento. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Miya Sommers (they/she) is a mixed-race gosei (fifth-generation Japanese American) and a third-generation settler on the territory of xučyun\, the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people\, the successors of the sovereign Verona Band of Alameda County. In deepening their understanding of this inheritance and responsibility as a settler at the intersection of the U.S. and Japanese empire\, Miya’s political commitments center on building in tandem with movements for collective liberation through their work as an educator and land steward.  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Joemy Ito-Gates (she/her) is a mother\, Ethnic Studies educator\, and community activist. Her signature composition\, “Ei Ja Nai Ka\,” performed worldwide\, commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to America through taiko drumming\, dance\, and song. TaikoPeace frequently collaborates with other artists. Currently\, 888 Taiko Collective has joined TaikoPeace\, uniting drum\, dance\, and song as expressions of resistance\, joy\, and solidarity with communities engaged in social justice work. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events
