With roots reaching back to pre-Columbian Mesoamerica\, the Tree of Life continues to represent the heavens (home of the divinities)\, the earth (home of humankind)\, and the underworld (home of the dead).   \n\n\n\nThe Tree of Life is a motif found in many cultures and beliefs around the world. It often symbolizes that life and death are equal partners in the continuation of life. In 1994\, a small group of visionary artists and community members in Oakland approached OMCA to organize the first community-based Día de los Muertos celebration. The first celebration linked a living tradition that uplifts a deep indigenous way of recognizing those who came before us to connect and reconnect our communities with our ancestors and ancestral ways of being. \n\n\n\nSince the first celebration\, OMCA’s Día de los Muertos has grown and revitalized our relationships\, bringing together communities from Oakland and across the Bay Area. Our celebration brings together Danza\, diverse artists and traditional ofrenda-makers\, pan de muerto and tlaxcalli (tortilla) makers and music from diverse regions in Mexico and Latin America. Our annual celebration brings the best of our traditional offerings to honor our dearly departed loved ones and ancestors. The first celebration planted the seed. The 30th annual Día de los Muertos celebration has established deep roots in long-held traditions that connect communities\, their harvests\, their flowers & song\, to honor those who cared for and protected our communities and their seeds\, people and earth. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate and honor our ancestors in 2024\, the Día de los Muertos Committee is holding fast to our traditions\, making a promise to always bring our best selves to the new day as we honor our past. \n\n\n\nJoin in a procession to open the celebration led by Día de los Muertos Committee members. Hands-on activities\, tasty food\, dance and music groups\, colorful ofrendas\, and ceremonia bring the community together for this healing tradition. View community-created ofrendas throughout the OMCA gardens paying homage to loved ones and support local artisans by purchasing Día de los Muertos goods for your home altar at our mercado. See celebration details below\, and feel free to bring your own picnic!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGENERAL TICKETS\n\n\n\nMEMBER TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Ceremony\n\n\n\nGarden\, Lower Level11:00 am Procession to the Garden led by the Día de los Muertos Committee for the dedication of the central ofrenda  \n\n\n\n11:30 am-11:55 am Opening Ceremony with Danza Azteca Cuauhtonal*  \n\n\n\n11:55 am–12:00 pm Formal Welcome featuring Mistress and Mister of Ceremony Juanita Chavez-Gordon and Arnoldo García* \n\n\n\n*In addition to ASL interpretation\, these portions of the program include Spanish and Nahuatl interpretation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances\n\n\n\nGarden Stage*\, Lower Level12:00–12:30 pm Performance by Monica Maria \n\n\n\n1:00–1:30 pm Performance by Mariachi Bonitas \n\n\n\n2:00–2:45 pm Performance by Mexico Danza \n\n\n\n3:00–3:45 pm Performance by Banda 300  \n\n\n\n3:45–4 pm Closing Palabras and Four Directions \n\n\n\n* If raining\, performances will move to the James Moore Theater\, Lower Level \n\n\n\nAmphitheater **\, Lower Level12:45–1:15 pm Poetry Readings by Aideed Medina\, Sara Borjas\, Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo \n\n\n\n1:30–2:30 pm Salsa and Bachata Lesson with In Lak’ech Dance Academy \n\n\n\n3:10–3:40 pm Performance by Diana Gameros \n\n\n\n** If raining\, performances will move to the Lecture Hall\, Lower Level \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditional Cleansing\n\n\n\nPatio 3\, Upper Level12:30–3:30 pm Receive a limpia\, which is a traditional ritual to heal heavy emotions\, like loss\, and rebalance one’s health and relationships. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nActivities\n\n\n\nGreat Hall\, Mid Level11 am–5 pm Visit Calli: The Art of Xicanx Peoples and experience intergenerational\, feminist\, queer\, and Xicanx-Indigenous artworks offering ancestral forms of liberation\, healing\, and being. This feast is in conjunction with Mexico’s annual two day Día de los Muertos\,  or Day of the Dead celebration\, on November 1 and 2. Offering altars\, known as ofrendas\, are created in the home or on children’s graves with vibrant decorations and offerings of toys\, sweets\, flowers\, favorite foods\, and personal objects that brought pleasure in life. Though the death of a child brings deep loss and pain\, this feast is rooted in the healing sentiment that one has gained an angel in heaven.  \n\n\n\nThis ofrenda was created in remembrance of the world’s innocents who have lost their lives due to the current disastrous events caused by nature or by humankind. With Día de los Angelitos traditions in mind\, we of the Día de los Muertos Committee of the Oakland Museum of California\, created this ofrenda to express feelings of anguish and compassion on behalf of our communities for the loss of countless young lives. \n\n\n\nThis installation was created in conjunction with the Oakland Museum of California’s annual commemoration of the Day of the Dead celebration by members of the museum’s volunteer Día de los Muertos Committee.
