DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth! at the Museum\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMember Tours: The Art and Practice of Native Basket Weaving with Featured Basketmaker\, Jennifer Bates\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a tour of the art and practice of Native basketry with Jennifer Bates. Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk) has been a basketmaker for over four decades.  She began learning traditional Mewuk basketry by studying with tribal elders as a child and continues to teach basketry from traditional methods of gathering and processing raw materials into her weaving. \n\n\n\nBates will lead a tour of the basket techniques and images showcased in OMCA’s special exhibition Born of the Bear Dance: Dugan Aguilar’s Photographs of Native California\, in which her work and images are featured. Bates will also draw connections to the extensive basket collection showcased in OMCA’s Gallery of California History. OMCA is pleased to welcome Bates for this cannot-miss special offering! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBECOME A MEMBER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator Bio\n\n\n\n\n\nJennifer Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk) has been a basketmaker for over four decades. When she was seventeen\, she began learning traditional Mewuk basketry by studying with family members and tribal elders. Jennifer was a founding board member of the California Indian Basketweavers’ Association (CIBA)\, of which she was also chairperson for the first thirteen years. She resides on the Tuolumne Rancheria\, where she continues to teach basketry\, from traditional methods of gathering and processing raw materials to weaving techniques. DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth! at the Museum\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for Gallery Chats\, an opportunity to chat with and ask questions of our enthusiastic and knowledgeable OMCA Facilitators. Gallery Chats put a twist on the traditional museum tour by encouraging meaningful conversations and fresh interpretations to connect with the artwork\, artifacts\, and stories in our galleries. \n\n\n\nGallery Chats take place in our Special Exhibitions and our Galleries of California Art\, History\, and Natural Sciences every Saturday from 1 to 3 pm and are included with Museum and Special Exhibition admission. No reservation necessary. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGET MUSEUM ADMISSION TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOMCA Members have access to special Member Tours every second Saturday of the month from noon to 1 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community.
