School Tours 2019–2020

With Docent support, students explore galleries and exhibitions through discussion, storytelling, and inquiry. Choose from Art, Natural Sciences, History, and Special Exhibition Tours for your OMCA visit.

Tours are $4.50 per person. A ticket must be purchased for every student and chaperone. Oakland School District schools may use a code to receive 30% off.

Note: Classes will be divided into small groups. Each tour will be slightly different. If your students have been assigned a worksheet, please wait until after your tour is finished to have them complete it. Please provide your students with writing surfaces and pencils. Pens are not allowed in the galleries. Please note, content may include sensitive material related to tour themes. OMCA Docents aim to provide age-appropriate programming for each group. Art Tours

Follow the story of the Golden State’s creative evolution through the themes of California Land, California People, and California Creativity in the Gallery of California Art. View works from all disciplines—from paintings and sculpture to new media. Students discover their role in California’s lineage of creativity and expression as they make connections between the state’s best known artists and their own lives.

Natural Sciences Tours

Get a fresh focus on California’s natural history in the Gallery of California Natural Sciences! Investigate seven places depicting the rich diversity of climate, geology, habitats, ecosystems, and wildlife in California, and learn about current research, contemporary issues of land use, environmental conflict, and conservation projects in our biologically-unique state.

Special Exhibition Tours

Oakland Museum of California’s special exhibitions offer unique school experiences for a limited time each year. Guided tour opportunities are listed below. Self-guided visits are another way to experience special exhibitions with your students.

DAY OF THE DEAD EXHIBITION TOURS (Grades K–12)

Times: 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm
