White Elephant Sale

White Elephant Sale

Updated September 30, 2020

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the Oakland Museum Women’s Board has decided to forgo the March 2021 White Elephant Sale in the warehouse as well as its January 2021 Preview Sale.

The Women’s Board has come to this decision to ensure the safety of the volunteers, shoppers, and donors who participate in the much-anticipated sale each year. A thousand dedicated volunteers organize the 96,000 square foot warehouse year-round in preparation for the sale. Unfortunately, this cannot safely be done this year due to COVID-19.

For the past 5 years, the White Elephant Sale has generated over $2 million each year to support the Oakland Museum of California. The Women’s Board is currently evaluating alternative strategies to raise funds for the Museum. They ask that you hold on to your valuable donations for now. Please visit the Oakland Museum Women’s Board website at whiteelephantsale.org for more information. The full statement from the Women's Board President, Sherry Westernoff, can be found here

The Oakland Museum of California greatly appreciates the hard work and generosity of all the past, present, and future White Elephant Sale volunteers. We are sad to miss this time-honored tradition, one of the biggest and best rummage sales in California for more than 60 years. The safety of the Women’s Board volunteers and all those involved is of utmost importance, and we thank you for your understanding.

The White Elephant Sale's Do Not Take list has been revised due to the pandemic. To ensure the safety of volunteers, the volume of donations will be reduced to create effective distancing and a safe working environment in the warehouse. The full list can be found here.
