SUMMARY: Friday Nights at OMCA | West Oakland Mural Project; DJ Monk Earl
DESCRIPTION:Fall Teacher Night\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us and the West Oakland Mural Project for a live community mural painting project at OMCA. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule:  \n\n\n\n5 – 8 pm – Off the Grid Service (10th Street) \n\n\n\n6 – 8 pm – Music by DJ Monk Earl (Amphitheater) \n\n\n\n5:30 – 8 pm – Live community mural painting project led by West Oakland Mural Project (Koret Plaza/Koi Pond\, Lower Level) \n\n\n\nGather at OMCA to celebrate Black History Month and the Women of the Black Panther Party through communal art. Led by the West Oakland Mural Project (WOMP)\, join us for a live community mural painting project starting at 5:30 pm. Supplies will be provided – all you need to do is show up! Enjoy this activity\, plus stick around for talks with the founder and curator of WOMP\, Jilchistina Vest\, and Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith\, the artist behind the “Women of the Black Panther Party” mural located in West Oakland. This activity will take place outdoors in Koret Plaza by the koi pond\, so warm clothes are recommended. \n\n\n\nDJ Monk Earl will be playing in the Amphitheater from 6 to 8 pm.  \n\n\n\nAbout the West Oakland Mural Project \n\n\n\nThe West Oakland Mural Project (WOMP) celebrates the Black women who dedicated their lives to the fight for freedom\, and with love as a guide\, served the people\, body and soul. It is also a tool for teaching\, community building and healing. People of all colors\, ethnicities\, genders\, and ages have been brought to tears upon arrival while taking photos and videos\, speaking to the homeowner and neighbors\, and reading the names of the women. The mural has quickly become a powerful centerpiece of this community\, a destination for meeting\, gathering\, remembering\, and looking forward with hope and determination to advance the women’s legacy. \n\n\n\nWOMP honors The Black woman As God. It reminds us the Black woman is to be celebrated. An art piece so unapologetically huge\, one can’t look at it without looking up to Black women. Stand in front of the women and feel the power and the love. \n\n\n\nAbout Jilchristina Vest \n\n\n\nJilchristina Vest was born and raised in Chicago. In 1986\, at 19\, she moved to San Francisco. In 2000\, after earning degrees in Black Studies\, Women’s Studies\, and Education from SFSU and USF\, she bought a historic Victorian in West Oakland\, CA\, known for its rich history of activism and legacy of the Black Panther Party. During COVID\, she founded\, produced\, and curated the West Oakland Mural Project\, a community-based art and history project that gave birth to the 2000 sqft “Women of the Black Panther Party” Mural on the side of her home and the Mini Museum @ the Mural on the first floor. Jil is a known Kindness Queen. Joy Junkie. Justice Warrior and a Fierce Activist. \n\n\n\nAccessibility  \n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. After their two self-released EPs\, stateside band tours\, and EU/UK solo tours\, the band’s first vinyl was put out by Pavement’s Bob Nastanovich—the “Eloquence” 7-inch on his Brokers Tip Records. 2022 saw a return to touring with Vancouver’s The Pack A.D. and a third EU solo tour. 2023 will see the release of a Nashville-recorded album of pandemic bedroom songs that Nastanovich describes as “glorious” and continued touring. \n\n\n\nAbout DJ Karlita \n\n\n\nA Nicaragüense-American born and raised in the Bay Area\, Karlita has spread her wings artistically as a performer\, competitor\, and community organizer. From her community\, she’s known as a freestyle dancer. SUMMARY:Entering the Dreamspace: A virtual study group for Black feminist conspiracy practices for liberation
DESCRIPTION:Fall Teacher Night\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant update 1/5/23: With storm conditions and uncertainty around potential museum closures this weekend\, this program will pivot to take place on Zoom. Please join the program on Sunday\, January 8 at 1pm via Zoom. \n\n\n\nTickets: $1 – $30 – Sliding Scale \n\n\n\nJoin co-conveners of the Church of Black Feminist Thought\, Ra Malika Imhotep and Miyuki Baker\, for an interactive study group session via Zoom. \n\n\n\nInspired by the work of contemporary and historical figures on display in OMCA’s Hella Feminist exhibition and catalyzed by this moment of multiple pandemics\, climate crisis\, racial capitalism\, gendered violence\, and political negligence\, study group participants will set out to explore what it means to “breathe together” while working towards collective liberation. \n\n\n\nNotes from Co-Conveners: \n\n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome\, however the Church of Black Feminist Thought would like to prioritize participants who self-identify as Black to attend.\n\n\n\n\nTaking the long tradition of transnational Black feminist organizing our guide\, this workshop will engage several practices and theories of organizing and collaborating across difference. Anchor texts and practices will be pulled from works of Alexis Pauline Gumbs\, June Jordan\, Aurora Vergara Figueroa and Katherine Arboleda Hurtado\, and others. \n\n\n\nOne of the goals of this workshop is to emphasize that this practice of Black feminist study is about engaging with the work of Black feminist thinkers in ways that move beyond just reading and writing.  Participants are not required to read or print anything in advance. That said:  \n\n\n\n\nMaterials by the thinkers to be studied and a link to materials will be shared with registered attendees before the program.\n\n\n\nPlease have a notebook/journal and writing utensils.\n\n\n\nParticipants are invited to adorn themselves for the Dreamspace! What do your wildest dreams look like? \n\n\n\n\n\nGET TICKETS\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Church of Black Feminist Thought\n\n\n\nThe Church of Black Feminist Thought is an embodied spiritual-political education project co-convened by Ra Malika Imhotep & Miyuki Baker in an effort to share citations in more accessible ways and to surface all the hidden labor done by black feminist artists\, scholars\, and writers.  While much of our academic work is suspended in long publishing timelines and hard-to-decipher language\, we believe that bringing the words of black feminist thinkers into conversation in physical (or digital) space\, then translating our collective ruminations into visual storytelling and illustration will nourish and support many.  We are most excited about this project because it lives at the intersection of gender\, race\, critical theory and visual art.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility \n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. However\, low voter turnout\, misinformation\, and disillusionment are widespread. Join us for this OMCA program that will provide valuable voter information for the upcoming November 8 General Election\, while centering creativity\, inspiration\, and joy. \n\n\n\nSchedule  \n\n\n\n12–2 pm  Screen Printing | Koret Plaza\, Lower Level \n\n\n\n1–2 pm  Voting Workshop | California Room\, Lower Level \n\n\n\nStarting at 12 pm at Koret Plaza\, artists Lena Wolff and Hope Meng who are featured in OMCA’s Hella Feminist exhibition will conduct a screen printing activity with their graphic “VOTE” posters. The VOTE posters are part of a free public art and civic engagement project that initially began in 2017 in response to the political climate in the United States. The current posters on view in Hella Feminist were designed to urge people to vote in the 2022 midterms for meaningful reasons related to social and environmental justice. There will be free giveaways of posters and other screen printed objects. Visitors are encouraged to bring clothing\, totes\, or other fabric items to screenprint with the artist’s “VOTE for Democracy” design. \n\n\n\nAt 1 pm in the California Room\, join us for a workshop led by Becca Horwitz\, Grassroots Organizer of Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte that will explore how we can center joy and community in voting. The workshop will address issues on the ballot that are vital to the health and wellbeing of our communities\, aiming to demystify confusing language of some of the ballot measures while helping the public develop the tools to discern accurate information about candidates and policies. \n\n\n\nFree poster download link. \n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events

The inspiration for this offering is rooted in Mexico’s annual November 1st celebration of Día de los Angelitos\, or Day of the Little Angels\, which honors the lives of children who briefly lived on this earth. This feast is in conjunction with Mexico’s annual two day Dia de los Muertos celebration\, or Day of the Dead celebration\, of November 1st and 2nd. Though the death of a child brings deep loss and pain\, the Día de los Angelitos feast is rooted in the healing sentiment that one has gained an angel in heaven.  \n\n\n\nAltars\, known as ofrendas\, are created in the home or on children’s graves with vibrant decorations and offerings of toys\, sweets\, flowers\, favorite foods\, and personal objects that brought pleasure in life.  \n\n\n\nWith these traditions in mind\, we of the Día de los Muertos Volunteer Committee of the Oakland Museum of California\, have created this ofrenda to express feelings of compassion on behalf of our communities for the loss of these young lives and to celebrate the joy they brought in life. \n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California Comité del Día de los Muertos  \n\n\n\nLuz Alvarez Martínez\, Chrissy Cano\, Bea Carrillo-Hocker\, Juanita Chávez\, Carlos Cil\, Alicia Díaz\, Isaac Emrick\, Angelita M. The group is composed of women from diverse backgrounds that have been influenced by various Mariachi artists as well as by their own family roots in Mariachi and individual interests. Their bond comes from their experience in the Mariachi circuit and their strong focus on education; members range from having Bachelors\, Masters\, and Doctorate degrees. Each member has a professional career during the week and indulges their mariachi enthusiasm during the weekends.  \n\n\n\nMariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano has performed at many private parties and local community events. Through their passion and love for Mariachi music\, the ladies strive on leaving an indelible mark as part of their history. Mariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano is honored to lead by example and represent Mexican Culture\, the Mariachi tradition\, and Women in the Arts. \n\n\n\nBallet Folklórico Mexicano \n\n\n\nFounded in 1967 by Carlos Moreno-Samaniego\, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano has achieved recognition both in the United States and in Mexico. In 1980\, the Mexican consulate in San Francisco named the company the official ambassador for ongoing cultural activities with Mexico. It has held that distinction for over forty years during which time it regularly conducts tours in Mexican cities such as Guadalajara\, Oaxaca\, Aguascalientes\, and Durango. Drawing on the artistic variety of Mexico’s different regions\, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano has a dance repertory of 120 pieces. Many of these are presented in their traditional form while others have been restaged to include artistic elements from more contemporary choreography. In this way\, the indigenous rhythms of Tarascan Indian dances from central Mexico stand in sharp contrast to the Spanish military and courtship dances from that region. Similarly the African influences that characterize dances from the Gulf of Mexico are juxtaposed by Mexican polkas that mark the influence of eastern European from the north. In her review of the company\, Jennifer Fisher\, the celebrated dance critic for the Los Angeles Times\, noted that the Ballet “has much appeal. They are tightly rehearsed and (their) choreography is inventive.” \n\n\n\nThe “Dia de Muertos” production originated in 2005. In this production the BFM shares many of the danzas and more ritualistic pieces which pay homage to those who have passed on. It shows how Dia de Muertos is a celebration of the life of loved ones. A time to share the wonders our loved ones enjoyed. \n\n\n\nJavier Navarrette’s Socially Distant Friends \n\n\n\nThe group Javier Navarrette’s Socially Distant Friends is a compilation of some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians/band leaders from many popular Bay Area dance bands from the Bay’s thriving Latin\, Salsa\, and Jazz scenes.
