SUMMARY:Friday Nights at OMCA Featuring Youth vs. Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:First Sundays\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid | Youth vs. Apocalypse – Hip Hop & Climate Justice; DJ Siyah \n\n\n\nEngage in the climate justice movement through hip hop with Youth vs. Apocalypse. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule: \n\n\n\n5–8 pm – Off the Grid Service (10th Street) \n\n\n\n5:30–6:30 pm – Siyah (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\n6:30–7:30 pm – Youth Vs. Apocalypse (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\n7:30–8:30 pm – Siyah (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\nBring your poems\, songs\, speeches\, verses\, and more! Youth Vs Apocalypse (YVA) will host an open mic-style Community Showcase at OMCA for all ages to provide space to navigate through injustices we all face in our respective communities. Even if it’s your first time on the mic or you have experience performing\, we want to hear your voice! \n\n\n\nYVA believes we not only need to speak up about these issues\, but we also need to listen to each other’s experiences. By recognizing each other’s struggle\, our strength increases. And with this strength\, we can create a solution that not only benefits one community but all communities.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Youth vs. Apocalypse (YVA)\n\n\n\nYouth Vs. Apocalypse is a diverse group of young climate justice activists working together to lift the voices of youth\, in particular youth of color and working class youth. Their collective action aims to fight for a livable climate and an equitable\, sustainable\, and just world.  \n\n\n\nYVA started as a group of Oakland youth\, supported by adults in their community\, using direct action and lobbying to fight a proposed coal terminal in their city\, then expanded its focus to other climate justice issues. After a video with youth from YVA pushing Senator Feinstein to support the Green New Deal went viral\, YVA students organized press conferences\, gave interviews\, wrote Op Eds\, and developed a website. By September 2019\, YVA organized a crowd of 30\,000\, after working as a group to develop an intersectional set of targets and demands\, organizing transportation for thousands of students from around the Bay Area\, and connecting with dozens of labor and community groups\, many of whom took climate action for the first time. YVA youth have supported climate actions across the state\, taken leadership on local and statewide campaigns\, and continued their presence in national media. YVA was recently named by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as one of (and the only youth-led) YBCA 100. YVA is now a local group of young people who are impacting national conversations on climate. \n\n\n\nYVA expands and redefines who leads in the climate movement through peer-to peer community organizing that meets frontline young people where they are and supports their powerful\, strategic leadership\, whether they previously considered themselves “leaders” or “environmentalists” or not. Through YVA\, youth leaders also have the support to work collaboratively and in community\, building the broad coalition we need to achieve system-wide change. \n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. Assistive listening devices and wheelchairs are available for checkout on a first come\, first served basis at the Ticketing Desk. To request other accommodations\, like American Sign Language (ASL)\, Cantonese\, Spanish or another language interpreter\, please email visitor@museumca.org at least three weeks before the event. \n\n\n\nAbout Friday Nights:\n\n\n\nReconnect with family\, friends\, and community at OMCA every Friday night. These free events provide a gathering place to come together each week\, including live music\, hands-on activities\, and Off the Grid food trucks. SUMMARY:HEALING JUSTICE: Exploring Public Art Practices Symposium
DESCRIPTION:First Sundays\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a day of performances\, presentations\, and conversations that will explore public art practices that are pushing the boundaries of what it means to heal in the midst of challenging times. \n\n\n\nHosted at the Oakland Museum of California\, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation’s Exploring Public Art Practices Symposium is a biennial\, one-day conference that brings together California artists from a range of practices to investigate the power of art in the public realm. \n\n\n\nThis year’s theme\, HEALING JUSTICE\, offers a poignant and timely topic to the Symposium. After three years of a global pandemic\, ongoing racial unrest\, climate disasters\, and a divisive political landscape\, these public artists are turning to practices that offer us opportunities to engage in communal healing. \n\n\n\nTickets for this day-long symposium are $25 for general public and $20 for OMCA Members. \n\n\n\n\nGET TICKETS\n\n\n\nMember Tickets\n\n\n\n\nFeatured presenters\n\n\n\nDohee Lee\, Keisha Turner\, Alex Bledsoe\, The Oakland Lowdown\, Angela Hennessy\, Cara Levine\, Hector Dionicio Mendoza\, Damien McDuffie\, Andreína Maldonado\, The Future IDs Project\, and a curated community building food experience hosted by La Cocina and Wahpepah’s Kitchen. \n\n\n\nView the event page in Spanish. \n\n\n\nMore on the offerings\n\n\n\nThis is Not a Gun with Cara Levine and Angela Hennessy This Is Not A Gun is a socially engaged artwork whose purpose is to utilize collective creative activism to open space for healing and cultivate an increased awareness of racial profiling\, police brutality\, and societal trauma in America. Through workshops participants recreate objects in clay that police have mistaken for guns. This Is Not A Gun is hosted by artists\, activists\, healers\, and mindfulness collaborators. \n\n\n\nArtistic Collaboration in Grassroots Performance with Andreína Maldonado (Workshop in Spanish only. English translation headsets will be available)Participants will learn about different somatics and artistic methodologies that can be used when working and collaborating with grassroots immigrant communities. The group will  explore concepts such as Popular Education as it relates to space facilitation\, leadership and collective knowledge; Body Somatics as it relates to wellness\, sustainability and resilience; and collective Art-Making as it relates to storytelling\, lyricism\, and movement expression. \n\n\n\nNews as Justice: Sharing Community Stories of Healing with the Oakland Lowdown How might we reframe local news as a force for liberation and elevate narratives of healing from our communities? This two-part workshop will explore tools from journalism that can help us ask important questions and tell stories that build power and agency. Participants will practice interviewing techniques and hear firsthand from community health advocates in Oakland. The goal is to facilitate a continuous interview that the Oakland Lowdown will record to produce a video segment of the iterative conversation. \n\n\n\nFuture IDs Art & Justice Leadership Cohort with Dr. Luis Garcia\, Rebecca Jackson\, Kirn Kim\, Phillip Lester\, Emiliano Lopez\, Sabrina Reid\, Jessica Tully\, and Gregory Sale This forum focuses on the most recent iteration of Future IDs\, a social-impact initiative about justice reform and second chances after incarceration. It will include a conversation on how the Cohort cultivates system-impacted and allied changemakers\, encouraging and enabling them to generate collaborative and individually-led advocacy programs as they strive to become more horizontal in their shared knowledge\, decision making\, and work together. \n\n\n\nCreando Espacio/ Making Space\, A Collaborative Community Based Project with Hector Dionicio MendozaCreando Espacio is a participatory art installation by Bay Area based artist\, Hector Dionicio Mendoza in collaboration with Amalia Mesa-Bains\, Viviana Paredes\, and Steve White.  As a child\, Mendoza grew up with a great appreciation for the importance of faith\, ritual\, and alternative healing traditions as practiced by his grandfather\, a fifth-generation curandero (shaman).  In Mexico\, as well as Central and South America\, the curandera/o plays an important role to many people embarking on the long and challenging journey to El Norte/The North (the United States)\, providing blessings and protection before they depart in search of a better way of life. Creando Espacio draws on Mendoza’s childhood memories creating an outdoor dwelling that modernizes his grandfather’s healing space in Mexico. \n\n\n\nPerformances\n\n\n\nMaroon is My Favorite Color (excerpt) by Keisha TurnerA movement-based exploration that asks\, what alternatives are there to the disorienting\, generational overexposure to extractive and exploitative labor? This embodied journey is an invitation to other Diasporic Africans to consider how we might “maroon” – that is\, self-emancipate – in a contemporary context.    \n\n\n\n칠성 새남굿- Chilseong SaenamGut (Duringut): Ritual for Sickness by Dohee LeeIn order to heal\, Dohee Lee calls upon a ritual for sickness\, illness\, and destruction from Jeju Island\, her hometown. This ritual is for facing and naming challenges\, for purging destructive and monstrous spirits (Heomaengyee-허맹이 *)\, white supremacy\, and patriarchal culture\,and inviting back vital spirits (Chilseong-칠성신 **). \n\n\n\nAbout the emcee\n\n\n\nAlex Bledsoe will emcee the event and help us shape the day with her insight and vision. Alex is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in Black liberation\, healing justice and health equity. \n\n\n\nAbout The Symposium\n\n\n\nThis program is curated and produced by the Learning\, Experience\, and Programming Team at OMCA. \n\n\n\nLaunched in 2016\, the Exploring Public Art Practices Symposium is supported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and is part of its Open Spaces Program. This grantmaking program has awarded over $2.8 million to enable artists to create temporary\, place-based public art projects that are responsive to issues relevant to communities in San Francisco and Oakland. \n\n\n\nKenneth Rainin Foundation is dedicated to enhancing quality of life by championing and sustaining the arts\, promoting early childhood literacy and supporting research to cure chronic disease. \n\n\n\nSupported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community.
