She currently teaches dance at an elementary school in West Oakland\, and is very passionate about bringing people together through creativity. Telice created her own all ladies virtual dance platform called PxssyPower Dance (@pxssypowerdance) to help uplift the empowering relationship of dance\, identity\, and community. Her goals include cultivating shared spaces for meaningful creative experiences of which every person walks away feeling inspired.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Main Event Dancers \n\n\n\nYaameen “Yaya” Muhammad is from Oakland\, California\, representing the dance crew\, Turf Feinz. Yaya can be followed on Instagram @gaslif3 and Facebook at Yaameen Muhammad. \n\n\n\nMiguel aka “Okami” is a French TURF dancer from the dance team\, Best Alive. Born and raised in Paris\, Okami’s goal is to share TURF dancing in Europe and around the world. The event will close with a music performance by Mahsa Vahdat\, and a call to action table by United For Iran in the OMCA Garden. She is the editor of three anthologies of Iranian diaspora literature: Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been: New Writing by Women of the Iranian Diaspora\, Tremors: New Fiction by Iranian-American Writers\, and\, A World Between: Stories\, Poems\, and Essays by Iranian-Americans. Her poetry has appeared in numerous national journals such as Reed Magazine\, Callaloo\, Raven’s Perch\, Green Linden Press\, and others. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Shaghayegh Cyrous\n \n Shaghayegh Cyrous is an Iranian-American transdisciplinary artist based in the Bay Area and recently in Los Angeles. Her work examines cross-cultural\, multi-modal communications\, especially highlighting the nuanced expatriate experience engendered by geopolitical shifts and their distorted notions of time and space. Commonly working with mediums such as interactive video installation\, photography\, and painting\, she has exhibited and performed internationally at notable museums and galleries. Cyrous received her BA in Visual Art from Science and Culture University in Tehran and her MFA in Social Practice from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Firuzeh Mahmoudi\n \n Firuzeh Mahmoudi is the Executive Director of United for Iran. After witnessing the 2009 uprising in Iran\, Mahmoudi organized the largest day of global support for Iran in history. Shortly after\, Mahmoudi started United for Iran to improve human rights\, support civil society\, and increase civic engagement\, mostly through technology. Join us for a homecoming evening with the author as we celebrate the official release of the paperback version of Nightcrawling in her hometown of Oakland\, CA and on the stage where she was named the 2018 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate.  \n\n\n\nIn conversation with journalist and UC Berkeley professor\, Shereen Marisol Meraji\, Mottley will discuss her book\, the topics and themes explored in the novel\, growing up in Oakland and how it influenced her writing and voice\, and her hopes for the future of Oakland and its young people.  \n\n\n\nTheir conversation will be followed by a book signing with Mottley outside of the theater. Leila has performed and run poetry workshops as the 2018 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate and her work has been published in Oprah Daily and The New York Times. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Shereen Marisol-Meraji\n \n Shereen Marisol Meraji is a veteran audio producer and journalist who has been telling stories with sound for more than two decades. Shereen helped create NPR’s critically acclaimed podcast covering race and identity\, Code Switch. During her time as co-host and senior producer\, Code Switch won numerous awards and Apple Podcasts named Code Switch its first-ever “show of the year.” Shereen’s currently an assistant professor of race in journalism and head of audio at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism\, educating the next generation of audio storytellers. And with this strength\, we can create a solution that not only benefits one community but all communities.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Youth vs. Apocalypse (YVA)\n\n\n\nYouth Vs. Apocalypse is a diverse group of young climate justice activists working together to lift the voices of youth\, in particular youth of color and working class youth. Their collective action aims to fight for a livable climate and an equitable\, sustainable\, and just world.  \n\n\n\nYVA started as a group of Oakland youth\, supported by adults in their community\, using direct action and lobbying to fight a proposed coal terminal in their city\, then expanded its focus to other climate justice issues. After a video with youth from YVA pushing Senator Feinstein to support the Green New Deal went viral\, YVA students organized press conferences\, gave interviews\, wrote Op Eds\, and developed a website. By September 2019\, YVA organized a crowd of 30\,000\, after working as a group to develop an intersectional set of targets and demands\, organizing transportation for thousands of students from around the Bay Area\, and connecting with dozens of labor and community groups\, many of whom took climate action for the first time. YVA youth have supported climate actions across the state\, taken leadership on local and statewide campaigns\, and continued their presence in national media. YVA was recently named by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as one of (and the only youth-led) YBCA 100. YVA is now a local group of young people who are impacting national conversations on climate. \n\n\n\nYVA expands and redefines who leads in the climate movement through peer-to peer community organizing that meets frontline young people where they are and supports their powerful\, strategic leadership\, whether they previously considered themselves “leaders” or “environmentalists” or not. Participants will practice interviewing techniques and hear firsthand from community health advocates in Oakland. The goal is to facilitate a continuous interview that the Oakland Lowdown will record to produce a video segment of the iterative conversation. \n\n\n\nFuture IDs Art & Justice Leadership Cohort with Dr. Luis Garcia\, Rebecca Jackson\, Kirn Kim\, Phillip Lester\, Emiliano Lopez\, Sabrina Reid\, Jessica Tully\, and Gregory Sale This forum focuses on the most recent iteration of Future IDs\, a social-impact initiative about justice reform and second chances after incarceration. It will include a conversation on how the Cohort cultivates system-impacted and allied changemakers\, encouraging and enabling them to generate collaborative and individually-led advocacy programs as they strive to become more horizontal in their shared knowledge\, decision making\, and work together. \n\n\n\nCreando Espacio/ Making Space\, A Collaborative Community Based Project with Hector Dionicio MendozaCreando Espacio is a participatory art installation by Bay Area based artist\, Hector Dionicio Mendoza in collaboration with Amalia Mesa-Bains\, Viviana Paredes\, and Steve White.  As a child\, Mendoza grew up with a great appreciation for the importance of faith\, ritual\, and alternative healing traditions as practiced by his grandfather\, a fifth-generation curandero (shaman).  In Mexico\, as well as Central and South America\, the curandera/o plays an important role to many people embarking on the long and challenging journey to El Norte/The North (the United States)\, providing blessings and protection before they depart in search of a better way of life. Creando Espacio draws on Mendoza’s childhood memories creating an outdoor dwelling that modernizes his grandfather’s healing space in Mexico. \n\n\n\nPerformances\n\n\n\nMaroon is My Favorite Color (excerpt) by Keisha TurnerA movement-based exploration that asks\, what alternatives are there to the disorienting\, generational overexposure to extractive and exploitative labor? This embodied journey is an invitation to other Diasporic Africans to consider how we might “maroon” – that is\, self-emancipate – in a contemporary context.    \n\n\n\n칠성 새남굿- Chilseong SaenamGut (Duringut): Ritual for Sickness by Dohee LeeIn order to heal\, Dohee Lee calls upon a ritual for sickness\, illness\, and destruction from Jeju Island\, her hometown. This ritual is for facing and naming challenges\, for purging destructive and monstrous spirits (Heomaengyee-허맹이 *)\, white supremacy\, and patriarchal culture\,and inviting back vital spirits (Chilseong-칠성신 **). \n\n\n\nAbout the emcee\n\n\n\nAlex Bledsoe will emcee the event and help us shape the day with her insight and vision.
