They made history by having the first female in the world to win the Western Lion King title\, and continue to keep the cultural art of dragon and lion dance alive through youth programs at over 30 different schools in San Francisco. You can check out their showcase every Saturday at 4pm in the heart of Chinatown on Grant Avenue! \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Hansamo \n \n Hansamo (youth Korean Percussion Group) is a homegrown Bay Area nonprofit that provides opportunities to middle and high school students interested in learning\, performing\, and promoting traditional Korean music\, dance\, art\, language\, and culture. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Str8jacket\n \n Founded in the Bay Area in 2012\, Str8jacket practices creativity\, grit\, and growth. She serves as the Legal Program Director for the Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative. She has shown a demonstrated interest and passion for social justice and civil rights. While working for the Autopsy Initiative\, Nicole assists family members\, who have lost their loved ones due to an in-custody death\, in obtaining free secondary autopsy services.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Dania Jordan\n \n \n\nDania Jordan is Associate Curator of History at the Oakland Museum of California. Dania has worked in cultural resource management\, and by training\, she is a historical archaeologist. She holds a B.A in anthropology and sociology from the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and a M.A in historical archaeology from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a concentration in Indigenous archaeology\, African American archaeology\, and the African Diaspora. Prior to joining the Oakland Museum of California\, Dania worked for the National Park Service’s Northeast Museum Services Center as a museum technician where she managed numerous projects and collections\, led community collaborations on interpretations of park sites\, and supervised a team of interns and peers to achieve the program’s goals.\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Roger A. Mitchell\, Jr. MD FCAP\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Mitchell is board certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology and is a tenured Professor of Pathology at Howard University College of Medicine. Among many other titles Dr. Mitchell is also the Pathology Coordinator for Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative\, where they perform second hand autopsies for those who have died in custody. He has performed over 2000 forensic autopsy examinations and has testified as an expert witness in over 65 cases. His expertise on Death in Custody has recently been highlighted nationally on “Dateline with Lester Holt” and “Meet the Press with Chuck Todd.” He has recently co-authored the book\, Death in Custody: How America Ignores the Truth and What We Can Do About It. A banjoist\, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist\, Hannah founded the Black Banjo Reclamation Project and is currently existing in Oakland and throughout the West Coast Corridor. Hannah was born and raised in Sacramento\, where the waters flow from Mount Shasta to the Oak Savanna foothills lining the valley\, to the delta and the bay. \n\n\n\nMayree is a storyteller and creates a musical backdrop\, weaving in folk music as a communication between cultures and through time. Composed while traversing Turtle Island\, the American landscape\, communing with people and plants\, their songs incorporate African rhythms and diverse European and modern American folk traditions to express the profound mystery contained within all beings. Through tools of community gathering\, social permaculture and self healing\, new realities are constantly being crafted and actualized. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Black Banjo Reclamation Project\n\n\n\nThe Black Banjo Reclamation Project is a vehicle to return instruments of African origin to the descendants of their original makers. Our theory of change is tied directly to re-appropriating our own culture by receiving banjos in the form of reparations and over time\, gaining skills that will advance individuals and communities for generations to come. This includes ancestral survival and land based skills including fostering the trade of instrument building and repair. Du Bois’ prolific statistical work by using interactive data visualizations created by Oakland based artists to illustrate trajectories impacted by both pro and anti-Black futures. Exhibit A is supported by participating policy makers and city workers from critical sectors including leaders from the Department of Race and Equity and is an expression of Oakland’s community. \n\n\n\nBetween digital interfaces\, augmented reality experiences\, and interactive workshops designed to spark conversation and critical engagement\, this experience is one meant to be amplified. \n\n\n\nParticipants are enlisted to engage their own friends through social media by sharing images of the art and their response to it\, and offering visions and forecasts for the future of Oakland. \n\n\n\nThe community dialogue will be moderated by journalist and host of Hard Knock Radio DJ Davey D and educator\, community leader\, and Exhibit A co-producer\, Hodari Davis. This 22-minute film illuminates the struggles and triumphs of Chicana womxn during this era and is considered to be the first major feminist Chicana documentary. Her projects are invested in challenging and unlearning settler-colonial ideology\,  while simultaneously re-centering Indigenous thought and practice.   \nGilda received her AB from UC Davis in Chicana/o Studies and Comparative Literature. She  graduated with a dual degree from California College of the Arts in the MFA Social Practice  program and the M.A. Visual and Critical Studies program. Prior to her graduate work\, she  served as the Curator for Galería de la Raza in San Francisco\, CA. Gilda also served as Assistant  Director for Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer in Woodland\, CA\, where she assisted in  coordinating Chicana/o /x programming and in leading free silk-screen workshops for youth and  community members. Gilda is a Ph.D. candidate in History of Art at Cornell University\, where  she is completing her dissertation “Reigniting the Sacred Fire: An Analysis of Chicana Indigenous and Queer Chicanx Art\,” that articulates how Chicana/o/x artists have used  materiality\, print mediums\, and visual culture as a method to re-connect to their Indigenous  knowledges\, ceremonies\, creation stories\, and medicines. Performer. Instructor. Musician. Originally from San Jose\, California\, Claire’s first instrument was the trombone\, which she played from fifth grade through her undergraduate education at University of California\, Santa Cruz.  It was there that she discovered her love of singing and went on to earn her Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance in 2008. Chapman’s talent for performing started at a young age and wrote his first song\, “Yo Te Amo Verdad\,” at the age of fourteen. After arriving in Oakland\, he founded SAOCO\, a band specializing in the fusion of Cuban rhythms with popular Reggaeton. It was at this time that Chapman’s name as a musical artist\, Dos Four\, was formed. Along with several successful collaborations over the years\, Dos Four has been growing strong ever since. \n\n\n\n\n\nLady Ryan is a Bay Area favorite – inspiring a sense of safety\, joy\, and belonging as a spiritual conductor and dedicate/d professional. Celebrating 20 years of productions in 2024\, it is one of the major platforms in North America for Punjabi music and a staple in the SF Bay Area arts culture. Highlighting the ancestral roots of the Punjabi dance while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences\, Non Stop Bhangra is a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance\, mixed with reggae\, hip-hop\, and electronica. Featuring dance lessons and dance performances with Dholrhythms Dance Company\, an ever evolving and eclectic mix of DJs\, live drummers\, and guest musicians\, it’s a treat for the eyes and ears and a one-of-a-kind experience only found in the Bay Area. \n\n\n\n\n\nBlack has always loved music and while growing up in Houston\, she started collecting records. When she moved to the Bay Area in 1991\, Black brought her records and a dream of doing music. She recalls seeing Chris C. and Pam the Funkstress perform\, and knew then that she wanted to be a female DJ. Black learned her craft 30 years ago from Sexy DJ at The Catch One in Los Angeles. Nadeeah helped her hone her skills and taught her how to get gigs. She has played alongside DJs including MAW\, Fuse\, Digit\, J Boogie\, Rusty Lazer\, and Trackademicks.
