A banjoist\, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist\, Hannah founded the Black Banjo Reclamation Project and is currently existing in Oakland and throughout the West Coast Corridor. Hannah was born and raised in Sacramento\, where the waters flow from Mount Shasta to the Oak Savanna foothills lining the valley\, to the delta and the bay. \n\n\n\nMayree is a storyteller and creates a musical backdrop\, weaving in folk music as a communication between cultures and through time. Composed while traversing Turtle Island\, the American landscape\, communing with people and plants\, their songs incorporate African rhythms and diverse European and modern American folk traditions to express the profound mystery contained within all beings. Through tools of community gathering\, social permaculture and self healing\, new realities are constantly being crafted and actualized. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Black Banjo Reclamation Project\n\n\n\nThe Black Banjo Reclamation Project is a vehicle to return instruments of African origin to the descendants of their original makers. Our theory of change is tied directly to re-appropriating our own culture by receiving banjos in the form of reparations and over time\, gaining skills that will advance individuals and communities for generations to come. This includes ancestral survival and land based skills including fostering the trade of instrument building and repair. We are pursuing ancestral healing and envision a world where the act of remembering gives us the power to shape our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. SUMMARY:Exhibit A: A Townhall on Anti-Blackness in Oakland
DESCRIPTION:Your browser does not support the video tag.\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \nGallery Chats at OMCA\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) partners with Edutainment for Equity and the City of Oakland Department of Race and Equity to host Exhibit A: A Townhall on Anti-Blackness in Oakland\, an interactive data experience on anti-Blackness in the city of Oakland. \n\n\n\nExhibit A employs the power of statistics and data visualization\, and casts the city of Oakland into the future to give a glimpse of what continued anti-Black models can bring and what futures are possible if such anti-Black structures are resisted.  \n\n\n\nExhibit A builds off of the legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois’ prolific statistical work by using interactive data visualizations created by Oakland based artists to illustrate trajectories impacted by both pro and anti-Black futures. Exhibit A is supported by participating policy makers and city workers from critical sectors including leaders from the Department of Race and Equity and is an expression of Oakland’s community. \n\n\n\nBetween digital interfaces\, augmented reality experiences\, and interactive workshops designed to spark conversation and critical engagement\, this experience is one meant to be amplified. \n\n\n\nParticipants are enlisted to engage their own friends through social media by sharing images of the art and their response to it\, and offering visions and forecasts for the future of Oakland. \n\n\n\nThe community dialogue will be moderated by journalist and host of Hard Knock Radio DJ Davey D and educator\, community leader\, and Exhibit A co-producer\, Hodari Davis. Interspersed between dialogue will be musical stylings and performances by CEO and founder of Edutainment for Equity and Exhibit A co-producer\, Candice Wicks-Davis (also known as Mama Candice)\, and several Oakland favorites.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve tickets\n\n\n\nMember tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT EXHIBIT A\n\n\n\nExhibit A employs the power of statistics and data visualization\, and casts the city of Oakland into the future to give a glimpse of what continued anti-Black models can bring and what futures are possible if such anti-Black structures are resisted. \n\n\n\nThis project is meant to be jumping off point for deeper conversations about the nature and direction of Oakland in general and in Black life in Oakland specifically. The project produced by Hodari Davis and hosted by Edutainment for Equality is happening in partnership with the City of Oakland Department of Race and Equity\, the City of Oakland Department of Arts and Culture and is situated within a larger network of several Oakland based Organizations. Exhibit A\,  though firmly rooted in the Oakland community and dedicated to issues of anti-blackness facing communities here in the Bay Area\, is also intended to develop and expand beyond and impact the broader political mythos that institutional racism does not exist in the United States. \n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events
