After bites and beverages\, head over to the Gallery of California Natural Sciences for a live drawing session hosted by Sketchboard\, a BIPOC figure drawing collective\, curating eclectic\, diverse\, and affordable events in the Bay Area over the last 10 years. \n\n\n\nGallery programming is included with the price of general Museum admission for guests\, and totally free for Museum Members. DESCRIPTION:Basketry Demonstration & Conversation with Jennifer Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk)\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 65th annual White Elephant (WES) Public Shopping Days Sale\, a Bay Area tradition and the largest rummage sale in Northern California. \n\n\n\nBrowse without the crowds on select days between January 31 and February 24 between 10 am and 2 pm. New merchandise will be added throughout the sale. Reserve your spot for $5 per day. Only 2200 shoppers will be allowed per day. \n\n\n\nThe new schedule for admittance into the Public Shopping Days is the following:  \n\n\n\nShoppers with reservations will be admitted first. After the reserved tickets have been admitted\, shoppers without reservations may purchase a ticket for $5\, as space allows. At 1:00 pm\, anyone can enter the warehouse and shops for free.  \n\n\n\nTickets are now available online: whiteelephantsale.org  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonating to the White Elephant Sale\n\n\n\nSupport the White Elephant Sale and OMCA by donating your gently-used goods! Check out the “Cannot Take” list for more information as you gather your donations.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Oakland Museum Women’s Board\n\n\n\nThe White Elephant Sale is held annually in the Spring\, attracting shoppers of all ages from the greater Bay Area and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe sole purpose of the Oakland Museum Women’s Board (OMWB)\, a dedicated group with 114 year-round members\, has been to raise money to support the Oakland Museum of California acquisitions\, exhibitions\, educational programs\, capital improvements\, and more. Since 1959\, the OMWB has contributed over $30 million to the Museum. AshEL Seasunz has been working intentionally with various shamanic healing practices and music since 2005. His music groups include hip hop based RebelWise\, Sage & Cedar\, and Dogon Lights. Celebrate and honor Lunar New Year traditions through family-friendly storytelling\, performances\, activities\, and more. Come together to uplift AAPI communities and explore the shared connections between Asian cultures of the Bay Area. \n\n\n\nJoin us on OMCA’s campus to ring in the Year of the Dragon together. A banjoist\, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist\, Hannah founded the Black Banjo Reclamation Project and is currently existing in Oakland and throughout the West Coast Corridor. Hannah was born and raised in Sacramento\, where the waters flow from Mount Shasta to the Oak Savanna foothills lining the valley\, to the delta and the bay. \n\n\n\nMayree is a storyteller and creates a musical backdrop\, weaving in folk music as a communication between cultures and through time. Composed while traversing Turtle Island\, the American landscape\, communing with people and plants\, their songs incorporate African rhythms and diverse European and modern American folk traditions to express the profound mystery contained within all beings. Through tools of community gathering\, social permaculture and self healing\, new realities are constantly being crafted and actualized. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Black Banjo Reclamation Project\n\n\n\nThe Black Banjo Reclamation Project is a vehicle to return instruments of African origin to the descendants of their original makers. Our theory of change is tied directly to re-appropriating our own culture by receiving banjos in the form of reparations and over time\, gaining skills that will advance individuals and communities for generations to come. This includes ancestral survival and land based skills including fostering the trade of instrument building and repair. Originally from San Jose\, California\, Claire’s first instrument was the trombone\, which she played from fifth grade through her undergraduate education at University of California\, Santa Cruz.  It was there that she discovered her love of singing and went on to earn her Bachelor of Music in Operatic Vocal Performance in 2008. Burrell will present select works from his first monograph\, Sugarcane & Lighting (Minor Matters\, 2023) and his latest short film\, The Saints Step in Kongo Time. \n\n\n\nThe book and film\, along with two recent solo exhibitions in 2023 in San Jose and San Francisco\, respectively\, are all part of an ongoing research project visualizing Burrell’s family’s experiences with plantocracy and sugar production after the Louisiana Purchase. Images span Senegal to Jim Crow Louisiana to modern-day Oakland through archival and contemporary photographs\, dispelling long-held tropes of the realizations of the American Dream.   \n\n\n\nBurrell is motivated by possibilities of healing the past\, as well as realizing what may be envisioned in the present and future.  \n\n\n\nA conversation with OMCA’s Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, Makeda Best\, will follow the presentation. Burrell’s book will be available for purchase and signing.  \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public with advanced registration \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGET TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Adrian Burrell\n\n\n\nAdrian Burrell (b. 1990\, Oakland\, California) is a third-generation Oakland artist utilizing photography\, film\, installation and experimental media. His work examines issues of race\, class\, and intergenerational dynamics\, inviting moments where collective storytelling can be a site for remembering.  \n\n\n\nBurrell has lived and worked on four continents. He is a US Marine Corps veteran\, and a graduate of San Francisco Art Institute (BFA\, film) and Stanford University (MFA\, Department of Art & Art History). At Stanford he lectured\, served as the Black Graduate Student Community Outreach Chair\, and was a visiting artist with Stanford’s Institute for Diversity in the Arts. \n\n\n\nHe is also a resident at SF FILM\, was a YBCA Creative Cohort fellow (2021-22)\, and was selected for the renowned Black Rock Residency in Dakar\, Senegal\, in 2022. \n\n\n\nHis first solo exhibition was on view at the ICA San Jose\, California\, from September 16\, 2022–February 26\, 2023; his second solo exhibition\, also in the Bay Area\, was on view at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco from October to December\, 2023. His work has recently been featured at the Format Festival in Darby\, United Kingdom\, and at Fotofest in Houston. Burrell’s work has been featured through The New Yorker\, BlackStar Film Festival\, and PopUp Magazine (2022); Photoville\, New York and the Pingyao International Photography Festival\, China (2020); and at SXSW (2013)\, among others. Hosted and produced by comedian Jackie Keliiaa (Netflix) the year’s showcase features headliner Kasey Nicholson (ABC)\, Ryan Moccasin (The Feather News)\, and dk echohawk (Indigequeer).  \n\n\n\nArrive early for live tunes by John Paul Hodge\, food by Wahpepah’s Kitchen and a Native artisan market\, featuring handcrafted jewelry\, beadwork and accessories. Alcoholic drinks and other beverages will also be available for purchase. Our celebration brings together Danza\, diverse artists and traditional ofrenda-makers\, pan de muerto and tlaxcalli (tortilla) makers and music from diverse regions in Mexico and Latin America. Offering altars\, known as ofrendas\, are created in the home or on children’s graves with vibrant decorations and offerings of toys\, sweets\, flowers\, favorite foods\, and personal objects that brought pleasure in life. Though the death of a child brings deep loss and pain\, this feast is rooted in the healing sentiment that one has gained an angel in heaven.  \n\n\n\nThis ofrenda was created in remembrance of the world’s innocents who have lost their lives due to the current disastrous events caused by nature or by humankind. Over the last decade in the Bay Area she has released two albums of original songs written in Spanish and English and has been highlighted often by NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series\, and a documentary film about her was released in 2020. Her music often tells stories of family\, migration\, and home\, and has led her to perform with other prominent performers such as Joan Baez\, Natalia Lafourcade\, and the San Francisco Symphony. Diana received the 2023 Music Award Grant from the Gerbode Foundation to record a new album to be released in 2025. \nDiana Gameros es cantautora y compositora. Her work can be found in Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day\, The Rumpus\, World Literature Today\, the Los Angeles Times\, amongst others. She believes that all Black lives matter and that Palestine will be free and will resist white supremacy until liberation is realized. She teaches at California State University\, East Bay and stays rooted in Fresno. \nSara Borjas es una poeta de Fresno que se autoidentifica como pocha xicanx. Her poetry is published widely in both print and online journals. She earned a BFA in Pictorial Art and a BA in French from San José State University\, served as Creative Ambassador of the San José Office of Cultural Affairs\, and was awarded a Creative Corps Initiative grant from the California Arts Council and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Your browser does not support the video tag.\n            \n		\n		            \n				                    \n\n				                Your browser does not support the video tag.\n            \n		\n    \n\n    \n        \n            \nBasketry Demonstration & Conversation with Jennifer Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk)\n\n        \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore You Are Here: Decolonial Cartographies and the Indigenous Bay Area\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is sold out. \n\n\n\nCelebrate Native Heritage Month with the release of the Before You Are Here map and event uplifting Ohlone voices and perspectives exploring the histories and representations of Bay Area Indigenous territories and their present manifestations. \n\n\n\nThe Before You Are Here map challenges traditional cartographic paradigms by weaving together multiple spaces and times to depict the Bay Area as an ambiguous\, relational\, and deeply contested site focusing on the where\, rather than the when.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers will include Corrina Gould\, Confederated Villages of Lisjan Nation\, Gregg Castro\, T’rowt’raahl Salinan / Rumsien-Ramaytush Ohlone\, and Quirina Geary\, Tamien Nation\, along with UC Berkeley cartographer Clancy Wilmott. Hosted By Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. \n\n\n\n\n Sold out\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nCorrina Gould (Tribal Chair for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan Nation)\, was born and raised in the village of Huichin\, now known as Oakland CA. She is the Co-Founder and Lead Organizer for Indian People Organizing for Change\, a small Native-run organization\, and the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust\, an urban Indigenous women-led organization within her ancestral territory. Through the practices of rematriation\, cultural revitalization\, and land restoration\, the Land Trust calls on Native and non-Native peoples to heal and transform legacies of colonization\, genocide\, and to do the work our ancestors and future generations are calling us to do. \n\n\n\nGregg Castro [t’rowt’raahl Salinan/rumsien-ramaytush Ohlone]\, has been involved in preservation of his cultural heritage for nearly three decades\, for both his late Mother’s rumsien Ohlone heritage\, and on his late Father’s side\, the since ended ‘Salinan Nation Tribal Council’ (serving two terms as Tribal Chair) and currently the non-profit organization\, Salinan T’rowt’raahl. Gregg is a member of the Society for California Archaeology (SCA). Gregg is a Co-Facilitator for the annual California Indian Conference\, a 30+ year gathering about California Indigenous heritage. Gregg is a writer and activist within the California indigenous community\, on issues regarding cultural preservation\, protection\, education and traditional practices. \n\n\n\nClancy Wilmott is an Assistant Professor in Critical Cartography\, Geovisualization and Design in the Berkeley Centre for New Media and the Department of Geography. She comes to UC Berkeley from the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester\, where she received her PhD in Human Geography with a multi-site study on the interaction between mobile phone maps\, cartographic discourse and postcolonial landscapes. \n\n\n\nQuirina Luna Geary is an enrolled citizen and Chairwoman of the Tamien Nation of the Santa Clara Valley. She is a board member for the Advocates of Indigenous California Language Survival (AICLS) and studied linguistics at the University of California Davis. She has worked for over 26 years revitalizing the language of her great-grandmother and has co-authored several academic publications. She is an advocate for the protection and preservation of Tamien cultural and sacred landscapes and has received the KQED American Indian Heritage Local Hero Award for her community service. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Sogorea Te’ Land Trust\n\n\n\nSogorea Te’ Land Trust is an urban Indigenous women-led land trust based in the San Francisco Bay Area that facilitates the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people. Through the practices of rematriation\, cultural revitalization\, and land restoration\, Sogorea Te’ calls on Native and non-native peoples to heal and transform the legacies of colonization\, genocide\, and patriarchy and to do the work our ancestors and future generations are calling us to do. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community.
