Media artist Masaki Fujihata reimagines photographs of Japanese Americans forced from Oakland and Los Angeles during World War II\, alongside works by Dorothea Lange\, revealing what lies beyond the frame. Through large-scale projections\, video\, and augmented reality\, visitors move between past and present as images are mapped onto the gallery and Oak Street Plaza. The exhibition invites reflection on displacement\, exclusion\, and how visual narratives shape civic understanding. \n\n\n\nBeHere / 1942 is organized by the Yanai Initiative and OMCA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nSupport for BeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration is provided by The Oakland Museum Women’s Board and the Japanese American Community Foundation. \n\n\n\nBeHere / 1942: A New Lens on the Japanese American Incarceration is an exhibit by the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities at UCLA and Waseda University\, in collaboration with the Oakland Museum of California.
