We will screen the documentary Alice Street\, directed by Spencer Wilkinson\, which narrates how a neighborhood mural on 14th and Alice Street catalyzed a multiracial coalition to rally in protection of cultural arts and livability in Oakland.  \n\n\n\nGroups featured in the film from the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts will open and close the program\, including a drum offering by Bantaba Drum Call to call in ancestors and a performance by Dimensions Dance Theater to root in Black joy and resistance—hearkening back to Howard’s many years spent honing her dance skills with Oakland dance legend Ruth Beckford before immersing in the visual arts. Hosted by Oakland Chinatown organizer Lailan Sandra Huen\, this day will delve into the intimate layers of anti-displacement work ranging from ensuring cultural continuance to sustaining the places that house personal\, collective\, and ancestral memory. Led by master drummer and culture keeper Baba Mosheh Milon\, Sr.\, Bantaba offers year-round community workshops that explore mindfulness\, movement\, and various drum and percussion styles. With a name drawn from the Mandingo term describing a “community circle and gathering place for important events\,” Bantaba roots its practice in therapeutic and cultural enrichment.   \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n About Dimensions Dance Theater\n \n Founded in Oakland in 1972\, Dimensions Dance Theater (DDT) creates\, performs\, heals\, and teaches dance reflecting the lives and historical experiences of African Americans and people throughout the African Diaspora. Under co-founder and Artistic Director Deborah Vaughan\, DDT is one of the oldest contemporary dance companies in the US\, widely recognized for its repertoire of traditional African\, jazz\, and modern dance idioms and its Rites of Passage program for youth. \nBased at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts in downtown Oakland\, DDT is a leading member of the Malonga Arts Collective and presents an annual home season in October. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n About Spencer Wilkinson\n \n Spencer Wilkinson is an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, educator\, impact producer\, and founder of Endangered Ideas\, an Oakland-based production company. His documentaries explore culture\, identity\, and social change\, paired with community impact campaigns that inspire civic engagement. Before filmmaking\, he spent a decade working with systems-impacted youth. His films include Alice Street\, ONE VOICE: The Story of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir\, Oakland Boogaloo (co-produced with KQED and recipient of a Regional Emmy Award)\, AscenDance\, and Solomon Hill. His work has screened internationally\, aired on PBS\, and reached thousands through educational and community partnerships. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n About Lailan Sandra Huen\n \n Lailan Sandra Huen is a 5th-generation Oaklander whose family sought refuge in Oakland Chinatown after the 1906 earthquake. She was part of the Oakland Chinatown Coalition\, having led campaigns to secure Community Benefits Agreements in new developments and working for equitable development.  She authored the “Our Neighborhoods” report for the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development\, which documents best practices to protect our cultural districts. Last West was born from OMCA’s archive of Lange’s images and notebooks and returns to bring this legendary Bay Area photographer’s stories to life. We will travel with Lange as actors perform the journey outlined in her road journals and oral histories\, and witness again the California we experience today. Set against a stunning projected backdrop of Lange’s photographs\, this offering is a meditation on witness\, migration\, and time.  \n\n\n\nThis production is a culmination of a weekend of programming centering and celebrating Dorothea Lange’s life and work. Kick off the weekend on Friday\, October 16\, 5:30–7:30pm with a free public symposium at UC Berkeley’s Northgate Hall\, featuring Last West creator Tess Taylor and Ken Light\, UC Berkeley Professor of Photojournalism. Saturday\, October 17\, 1-3pm join Last West actors from the production in an intimate day of teasers with pop up monologues in OMCA’s Galleries of Art and History right alongside Lange’s displays. Her fifth collection\, Come Bite\, is forthcoming from Milkweed Editions in April 2027. She served as the 2024–25 Poet Laureate of El Cerrito\, CA as a 2024 Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow. She has taught at UC Berkeley\, UC Davis\, Saint Mary’s College\, and Whittier College\, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the Seamus Heaney Centre in Belfast\, Northern Ireland. Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange—originally written in the OMCA Archive— began as a collage poem commissioned by MoMA in 2020\, and has grown into an immersive theater piece. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Ciera Eis | Director\n \n Ciera Eis (she/her) is a theatrical director who develops socio-political new work\, with an eye for the queer\, messy\, visceral\, and wildly funny. She has developed new work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre\, American Conservatory Theater\, Magic Theatre\, and Shotgun Players\, with recent directing credits including Love U: Queer New Musical (Z Space)\, Faust on 4Chan (The Ground Floor\, Berkeley Rep)\, and Circle Mirror Transformation (Custom Made Theatre). For five years she produced Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor new-work residency\, and she has served as Artistic Director of both Custom Made Theatre Company and FaultLine Theater. She is a 2024 Directors Lab West recipient and a 2019–2021 SDCF Observer.  \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Ryan Yu | Projection Designer\n \n Ryan Yu is a Bay Area–based media and projection designer working across theatre\, dance\, and music. For Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange\, Ryan built the production’s immersive visual world\, translating Dorothea Lange’s photographic archive into a living\, shifting backdrop that moves with the performance. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Sara Witsch | Sound Designer\n \n Sara Witsch (she/they) is a Bay Area sound designer\, production specialist\, and self-described noise-maker\, with a degree in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University\, where she studied sound design\, production\, and performance for the stage. Her sound work has been heard in theatres and unexpected outdoor spaces across the Bay Area\, as well as in podcasts\, radio plays\, film\, and video games.
