Reconnect with friends and family and make Friday Nights at OMCA a regular habit!Many of our September programs celebrate Latinx Heritage Month. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Gambizi & Dos Four\n\n\n\nExperience an engaging and vibrant environment of social movement and connection. Community activist and dancer Samantha Velazquez will lead an Introductory Salsa & Bachata class\, touching on fundamentals of solo technique and rhythm\, choreography\, and creativity\, as well the essence of being present and connected. Gambizi & Dos Four up the energy with their unique sound combining Latin\, Hip Hop and other inspirations with Cuban singer/songwriter Leyder Chapman. Innovative DJ Yuka Yu spins dance music all evening in the 10th Street Amphitheater. \n\n\n\n6—7 pm – Salsa and Bachata with Samantha Velazquez\, Oak Street Plaza6—7:30 pm – Gambizi & Dos Four\, OMCA Garden6–8 pm – Free photo booth\, near the Redwood Burl6–8 pm – Gallery Activation Hours\, Great Halll6:30—8:30 pm – DJ Yuka Yu\, 10th Street Amphitheater \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Gambizi & Dos Four \n\n\n\nGambizi & Dos Four blend Caribbean and Afro-Latin rhythms like Salsa\, Cumbia\, Salsa Choque\, Latino House\, and Hip Hop. These two local artists have been making music in the Bay Area for a number of years; Gambizi as a Hip-Hop artist and Dos Four as a Latin Artist. Lead singer and songwriter Leyder Chapman was born in Holguín\, Eastern Cuba and raised in Havana. Chapman’s talent for performing started at a young age and wrote his first song\, “Yo Te Amo Verdad\,” at the age of fourteen. After arriving in Oakland\, he founded SAOCO\, a band specializing in the fusion of Cuban rhythms with popular Reggaeton. It was at this time that Chapman’s name as a musical artist\, Dos Four\, was formed. Gambizi and Dos Four were introduced by a mutual friend in 2012 and have been working together along with their band ever since. \n\n\n\nAbout Yuka\n\n\n\nYuka became serious about making her own music and started DJing in London in Camden Town\, training at the London Sound Academy in 2018. She has opened for electronic artists like Cosmic Gate\, The Crystal Method\, Audien\, Valentino Khan\, Poolside\, and Eric Prydz\, and live bands such as ALO\, The California Honeydrops\, and Rebirth Brass Band all while playing in premiere venues and nightclubs all over London\, East Asia\, and North America. Yuka sings and plays the Chinese flute\, and DJ’s regularly with live musicians who play the Guzheng (古筝)\, violin\, bass guitar\, trumpet\, and didgeridoo. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibilityOakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. This week\, Let’s Lab presents Ian Santillano\, a Bay Area Filipino American Musician with influences like Thundercat\, John Mayer\, Yebba\, and Faye Webster.. \n\n\n\nAbout La Mezcla\n\n\n\nLa Mezcla is a polyrhythmic\, San Francisco-based dance and music ensemble rooted in Chicana\, Latina\, and Indigenous traditions and social justice. Founded in 2015 by Dance/USA fellow Vanessa Sanchez\, their work brings together Tap dance\, Son Jarocho and Afro-Caribbean rhythms to bring the often-unseen histories and experiences of communities of color to stages\, streets\, and fields. Their production “Pachuquísmo\,”  an all-womxn Tap dance and Son Jarocho performance about Pachucas and the Zoot Suit Riots\, received the Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Production. Their new work “Ghostly Labor\,” explores the legacy of labor in the US-Mexico borderlands and the joy of collective resistance and the associated film was named Best Short Documentary at the Los Angeles Dance Camera West Festival. The full-length premiere of “Ghostly Labor” will take place at Brava! Cuban Salsa style is based in the original form of Salsa rooted in Cuba. It is characterized by Afro Cuban style body movement which includes body isolation and hip movement. In this class we briefly go through the basic movements and steps to apply these influences. Esotérica Tropical casts healing spells with a luminous and healing voice blending folk harp\, Afro-Puerto Rican bomba rhythms\, and electronics. Sketchboard is a collective that has run multiple weekly figurative drawing events in SF and Oakland for 10 years\, with the mission of bringing artists and bodies from underrepresented minorities to the arts. The workshop is for all ages and  includes two hours of clothed\, life drawing with a professional art model. Art supplies will be provided. Space is limited to 40 seats\, first come\, first served. Chapman’s talent for performing started at a young age and wrote his first song\, “Yo Te Amo Verdad\,” at the age of fourteen. After arriving in Oakland\, he founded SAOCO\, a band specializing in the fusion of Cuban rhythms with popular Reggaeton. It was at this time that Chapman’s name as a musical artist\, Dos Four\, was formed. Along with several successful collaborations over the years\, Dos Four has been growing strong ever since. \n\n\n\n\n\nLady Ryan is a Bay Area favorite – inspiring a sense of safety\, joy\, and belonging as a spiritual conductor and dedicate/d professional. Her passion for music can be heard throughout the Bay Area and beyond\, whether she’s energizing the crowd at Warriors games\, hosting one of her celebrated Soulovely or Sweetspot parties\, or gracing the airwaves of 91.7 KALW in San Francisco. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the Bay Area music scene in 2023 alone\, Lady Ryan was voted best DJ in the Bay Area by Bay Area Reporter Magazine and honored by the CIty of Oakland for her leadership in LGBTQ music and arts communities.  Lady Ryan has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Diana Ross\, George Clinton\, Erykah Badu\, Journey\, Indigo Girls\, and Anderson Paak. Celebrating 20 years of productions in 2024\, it is one of the major platforms in North America for Punjabi music and a staple in the SF Bay Area arts culture. Highlighting the ancestral roots of the Punjabi dance while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences\, Non Stop Bhangra is a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance\, mixed with reggae\, hip-hop\, and electronica. Featuring dance lessons and dance performances with Dholrhythms Dance Company\, an ever evolving and eclectic mix of DJs\, live drummers\, and guest musicians\, it’s a treat for the eyes and ears and a one-of-a-kind experience only found in the Bay Area. \n\n\n\n\n\nBlack has always loved music and while growing up in Houston\, she started collecting records. When she moved to the Bay Area in 1991\, Black brought her records and a dream of doing music. She recalls seeing Chris C. and Pam the Funkstress perform\, and knew then that she wanted to be a female DJ. Black learned her craft 30 years ago from Sexy DJ at The Catch One in Los Angeles. Nadeeah helped her hone her skills and taught her how to get gigs. She has played alongside DJs including MAW\, Fuse\, Digit\, J Boogie\, Rusty Lazer\, and Trackademicks. This Friday OMCA invites visitors to bring their sketch pads and appetites and get creative in the Museum’s Gallery of California Art with live drawing sessions. \n\n\n\nOMCA welcomes all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the gallery\, please be mindful of the space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite or charcoal pencils. \n\n\n\nSketching in the gallery is first come\, first served and is included with the price of general Museum Gallery access and free for Museum Members. The Bolo Music Group led by Ruby Ibarra and producer LASI are set to light up the stage and pull audiences into authentic Filipino musical storytelling that engage with Ruby’s identity as both a woman and as a 1.5 generation immigrant that encourages global connection.  \n\n\n\nFurther connection is to be had as OMCA invites back a quickly growing classic\, Sketchboard Live Drawing! Bring your sketch pads and your perspective to the Museum’s Gallery of California Art and be inspired with live drawing sessions. \n\n\n\nOMCA welcomes all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. In 2023\, she co-founded Bolo Music Group\, a new record label and platform which aims to support and highlight Filipino-American talent. Her latest single\, “Switch\,” is featured on NBA2K24 video game\, and her other new music can also be heard across Seasons 1-3 of the Fox Network’s hit television show\, The Cleaning Lady.  \n\n\n\n​​Ian Santillano\, pronounced “San-Till-Yeah-Know”\, is a Filipino-American singer\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer known for his commanding guitar solos and soulful vocals that unveil his deepest emotions\, creating a musical refuge where listeners can revel or seek solace. Through his music\, Ian liberates his thoughts and feelings\, fostering a sense of shared humanity among his audience. \n\n\n\n\n\nSketchboard is a BIPOC figure drawing collective\, curating eclectic\, diverse\, and affordable events in the Bay Area over the last 10 years. Immediately after\, the MasFX Carnival Dance Experience will perform a portion of their 2024 showcase that leads into a party worthy blend of Soca\, Reggaeton\, Dancehall\, Afrobeats\, Baile Funk\, Hip-Hop\, House and more with a set from  VibeHauss DJ’s. The Amphitheater will be activated too and will transport you to Trinidad and Tobago with the smooth vibrations of Socalypso Steel Pan Band.  \n\n\n\nAs we celebrate the vibrant cultural tapestry of the Bay Area\, OMCA also welcomes the Alameda County Community Food Bank as it brings its mission to end hunger to Friday Nights with OMCA and Off the Grid! Come meet the Food Bank and get hands on with its breadth of programs and services\, including grassroots advocacy\, nutrition education\, and CalFresh (food stamp) enrollment assistance. In the nineties Odaymar and Oli created Krudas Cubensi with Wanda Kruda\, in 2006 they relocated to the US to pursue their dreams and internationalize their career and to date they have been performing\, recording\, giving talks\, workshops\, educating and touring nationally\, globally and virtually. They have operated entirely independently and under self-management in spaces such as Brava Theatre\, La Peña Cultural Center\, Oakland Museum of California\,  UC Berkeley (Black Studies Department Artistic Fellowship 2021- 2022)\, SXSW Music Festival\, Lincoln Center\, Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts\, UCLA\, UCSC\, NYU\, CU and many more. \n\n\n\n\n\nPer Sia comes with a pedigree from weekly performances at the late\, iconic Esta Noche. Her trajectory has gone on to include art curation\, stand-up\, television\, and maybe a quinceañera or two\, in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and México. Per Sia is currently a regular performer in the nationally acclaimed “Drag Story Hour” as well as an educator in residence at an after school arts program in the San Francisco Unified School District profiled on KQED Arts\, National Public Radio\, and CNN. \n\n\n\n\n\nA dancer\, community organizer\, and now DJ\, Karlita fuses all the influences of her Bay Area roots and Central American background into her art. Using dance as a portal into other creative outlets\, she’s been able to travel\, teach and compete internationally\, and has thrown groundbreaking events such as AfroRooted. Investigating landscapes of the tropical diaspora\, Reyna Tropical is a musical exploration of intuition\, transition\, connection and continuation—a celebration of spiritual survival pulsing with the beat of all things tropical. Reyna stands in solidarity with the band’s founding vision to be a voice and a platform for the joy and injustices living within the spectrum of Queer Love & Afro-Mexico. Fabiola Reyna is accompanied by what she calls “The Tropical Collective / La Colectiva Tropical” – A relationship between herself\, fans\, friends\, musicians\, DJs\, and producers committed to uplifting the culture of the tropical diaspora\, and creating spaces where Black\, Indigenous and Queer joy can thrive. \n\n\n\n\n\nmare.e.fresh is a dj and producer based out of the Bay Area. Bachata Queer instructors\,  Angelica and Jahaira\, are creating a gender inclusive and beginner friendly space to learn and bachata with Pride. \n\n\n\nCome express your creativity and unique perspective in the OMCA galleries with Sketchboard Live Figure Drawing.  \n\n\n\nOMCA welcomes all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the gallery\, please be mindful of the space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite or charcoal pencils. \n\n\n\nSketching in the gallery is included with the price of general Museum Gallery access and free for Museum Members. If Sly Stone\, Jimi Hendrix\, Chrissie Hynde\, and Chaka Khan all jammed together\, this band would be the result.  \n\n\n\nSkip The Needle is an Oakland-based queer female quartet made up of musical superstars of the Bay Area; Vicki Randle (The Tonight Show\, Mavis Staples) Shelley Doty (Shelley Doty X-Tet\, Jambay)\, Kofy Brown (Kofy Brown Band\, Sistas in the Pit) and Katie Cash (Katie Cash Band\, Year of the Fist). Together\, they make politically astute\, rock n’ roll-funk. Their songs are musically diverse and carry a strong\, socially conscious message\, delivered with extreme joy. Formed in 2014\, Skip The Needle has released two full-length albums and their latest EP – Octavia Of Earth\, Volume 2\, inspired by black feminist icon Octavia E. Butler\, released on Soulectric – A division of Little Village Foundation in Fall of 2023. The band just wrapped a 2 month\, entirely sold out run\, of Hedwig and The Angry Inch at Shotgun Players in Berkeley\, CA and have started writing their next album\, after receiving a grant for the project from WAM. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn Lak’ech Dance Academy‘s mission is to co-create a community of queer\, trans and allied dancers to celebrate resilience\, nurture collective strength and heal from oppression. In Lak’ech Dance Academy’s Founders Angelica & Jahaira created the organization with the intention of  using Afro-Latin dance as a tool for self-care and healing. In Lak’ech Dance creates a safe spacefor LGBTQ2S+ (Lesbian\, Gay\, Bi\, Trans\, Queer\, Two Spirited\, +) people to claim their identity with pride while reaching personal goals through dance. In Lak’ech aims to increase LGBTQ2S+ visibility in hetero-normative Latin Dance environments by training strong LGBTQ2S+ dancers. Self-described as “a gumbo of styles and sounds from around the globe including roots sounds of world music\, Hip Hop\, funk\, and jazz\,” the Whoadees stay true to their Bay Area roots by bringing a fusion of multiple genres to the mix inspiring you to dance or simply close your eyes and be filled with soulful sounds. \n\n\n\nIf you’re feeling inspired by the creativity we have your back with a great outlet. Come express your creativity and unique perspective in the OMCA galleries with Sketchboard Live Figure Drawing.  \n\n\n\nOMCA welcomes all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the gallery\, please be mindful of the space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite or charcoal pencils. \n\n\n\nSketching in the gallery is included with the price of general Museum Gallery access and free for Museum Members.
