Du Bois’ prolific statistical work by using interactive data visualizations created by Oakland based artists to illustrate trajectories impacted by both pro and anti-Black futures. Exhibit A is supported by participating policy makers and city workers from critical sectors including leaders from the Department of Race and Equity and is an expression of Oakland’s community. \n\n\n\nBetween digital interfaces\, augmented reality experiences\, and interactive workshops designed to spark conversation and critical engagement\, this experience is one meant to be amplified. \n\n\n\nParticipants are enlisted to engage their own friends through social media by sharing images of the art and their response to it\, and offering visions and forecasts for the future of Oakland. \n\n\n\nThe community dialogue will be moderated by journalist and host of Hard Knock Radio DJ Davey D and educator\, community leader\, and Exhibit A co-producer\, Hodari Davis. Chapman’s talent for performing started at a young age and wrote his first song\, “Yo Te Amo Verdad\,” at the age of fourteen. After arriving in Oakland\, he founded SAOCO\, a band specializing in the fusion of Cuban rhythms with popular Reggaeton. It was at this time that Chapman’s name as a musical artist\, Dos Four\, was formed. Along with several successful collaborations over the years\, Dos Four has been growing strong ever since. \n\n\n\n\n\nLady Ryan is a Bay Area favorite – inspiring a sense of safety\, joy\, and belonging as a spiritual conductor and dedicate/d professional. Her passion for music can be heard throughout the Bay Area and beyond\, whether she’s energizing the crowd at Warriors games\, hosting one of her celebrated Soulovely or Sweetspot parties\, or gracing the airwaves of 91.7 KALW in San Francisco. Celebrating 20 years of productions in 2024\, it is one of the major platforms in North America for Punjabi music and a staple in the SF Bay Area arts culture. Highlighting the ancestral roots of the Punjabi dance while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences\, Non Stop Bhangra is a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance\, mixed with reggae\, hip-hop\, and electronica. Burrell will present select works from his first monograph\, Sugarcane & Lighting (Minor Matters\, 2023) and his latest short film\, The Saints Step in Kongo Time. \n\n\n\nThe book and film\, along with two recent solo exhibitions in 2023 in San Jose and San Francisco\, respectively\, are all part of an ongoing research project visualizing Burrell’s family’s experiences with plantocracy and sugar production after the Louisiana Purchase. Images span Senegal to Jim Crow Louisiana to modern-day Oakland through archival and contemporary photographs\, dispelling long-held tropes of the realizations of the American Dream.   \n\n\n\nBurrell is motivated by possibilities of healing the past\, as well as realizing what may be envisioned in the present and future.  \n\n\n\nA conversation with OMCA’s Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs\, Makeda Best\, will follow the presentation. His work examines issues of race\, class\, and intergenerational dynamics\, inviting moments where collective storytelling can be a site for remembering.  \n\n\n\nBurrell has lived and worked on four continents. He is a US Marine Corps veteran\, and a graduate of San Francisco Art Institute (BFA\, film) and Stanford University (MFA\, Department of Art & Art History). At Stanford he lectured\, served as the Black Graduate Student Community Outreach Chair\, and was a visiting artist with Stanford’s Institute for Diversity in the Arts. \n\n\n\nHe is also a resident at SF FILM\, was a YBCA Creative Cohort fellow (2021-22)\, and was selected for the renowned Black Rock Residency in Dakar\, Senegal\, in 2022. \n\n\n\nHis first solo exhibition was on view at the ICA San Jose\, California\, from September 16\, 2022–February 26\, 2023; his second solo exhibition\, also in the Bay Area\, was on view at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco from October to December\, 2023. His work has recently been featured at the Format Festival in Darby\, United Kingdom\, and at Fotofest in Houston. Burrell’s work has been featured through The New Yorker\, BlackStar Film Festival\, and PopUp Magazine (2022); Photoville\, New York and the Pingyao International Photography Festival\, China (2020); and at SXSW (2013)\, among others. In the years that followed\, Negrito would go on to take home three consecutive GRAMMY Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album\, tour with everyone from Sturgill Simpson to Chris Cornell\, collaborate in the studio with the likes of Sting and E-40\, launch his own Storefront Records label\, perform at Lollapalooza\, Glastonbury\, Newport Folk\, Bryon Bay Blues\, and nearly every other major festival on the map\, and found the Revolution Plantation\, an urban farm aimed at youth education and empowerment. \n\n\n\n\n\nKameron Douglass\, known by his stage name KD the Poet\, hails from Berkeley\, California. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the gallery\, please be mindful of the space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite or charcoal pencils. \n\n\n\nSketching in the gallery is included with the price of general Museum Gallery access and free for Museum Members. In 2023\, she co-founded Bolo Music Group\, a new record label and platform which aims to support and highlight Filipino-American talent. Her latest single\, “Switch\,” is featured on NBA2K24 video game\, and her other new music can also be heard across Seasons 1-3 of the Fox Network’s hit television show\, The Cleaning Lady. \n\n\n\n​​Ian Santillano\, pronounced “San-Till-Yeah-Know”\, is a Filipino-American singer\, songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer known for his commanding guitar solos and soulful vocals that unveil his deepest emotions\, creating a musical refuge where listeners can revel or seek solace. Through his music\, Ian liberates his thoughts and feelings\, fostering a sense of shared humanity among his audience. \n\n\n\n\n\nSketchboard is a BIPOC figure drawing collective\, curating eclectic\, diverse\, and affordable events in the Bay Area over the last 10 years. The Amphitheater will be activated too and will transport you to Trinidad and Tobago with the smooth vibrations of Socalypso Steel Pan Band.  \n\n\n\nAs we celebrate the vibrant cultural tapestry of the Bay Area\, OMCA also welcomes the Alameda County Community Food Bank as it brings its mission to end hunger to Friday Nights with OMCA and Off the Grid! In the nineties Odaymar and Oli created Krudas Cubensi with Wanda Kruda\, in 2006 they relocated to the US to pursue their dreams and internationalize their career and to date they have been performing\, recording\, giving talks\, workshops\, educating and touring nationally\, globally and virtually. They have operated entirely independently and under self-management in spaces such as Brava Theatre\, La Peña Cultural Center\, Oakland Museum of California\,  UC Berkeley (Black Studies Department Artistic Fellowship 2021- 2022)\, SXSW Music Festival\, Lincoln Center\, Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts\, UCLA\, UCSC\, NYU\, CU and many more. \n\n\n\n\n\nPer Sia comes with a pedigree from weekly performances at the late\, iconic Esta Noche. Her trajectory has gone on to include art curation\, stand-up\, television\, and maybe a quinceañera or two\, in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and México. Per Sia is currently a regular performer in the nationally acclaimed “Drag Story Hour” as well as an educator in residence at an after school arts program in the San Francisco Unified School District profiled on KQED Arts\, National Public Radio\, and CNN. \n\n\n\n\n\nA dancer\, community organizer\, and now DJ\, Karlita fuses all the influences of her Bay Area roots and Central American background into her art. Using dance as a portal into other creative outlets\, she’s been able to travel\, teach and compete internationally\, and has thrown groundbreaking events such as AfroRooted. Teatro Jornalero is an Oakland based ensemble theater group made up of day laborers that uses theater\, music\, and dialogue to educate immigrant workers about their rights. The ensemble works to humanize the immigration debate and empower their community by reflecting their stories in their own voices. It will be hosted by Azucena Rasilla\, bilingual journalist for The Oaklandside and a longtime reporter on Oakland arts\, culture and community. Their songs are musically diverse and carry a strong\, socially conscious message\, delivered with extreme joy. Formed in 2014\, Skip The Needle has released two full-length albums and their latest EP – Octavia Of Earth\, Volume 2\, inspired by black feminist icon Octavia E. Butler\, released on Soulectric – A division of Little Village Foundation in Fall of 2023. In Lak’ech Dance Academy’s Founders Angelica & Jahaira created the organization with the intention of using Afro-Latin dance as a tool for self-care and healing. After grabbing a meal from a wide and weekly changing menu of culinary creations\, head to the OMCA Garden where you’ll find picnic tables and blankets to enjoy your local eats. Play lawn and table games\, enjoy weekly rotating Museum programming\, and create new memories at one of the Town’s most treasured spaces right in the heart of Oakland. \n\n\n\nNo outside alcohol permitted. Performances are subject to change. Limited $10 flat rate parking for Friday Nights is available in the OMCA Garage until 10 pm.
