SUMMARY:Friday Nights at OMCA Featuring Extinction Rebellion Bay Area and Sustainability and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Spotlight Sundays: Undocumented Heart\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid | Extinction Rebellion Bay Area and Sustainability and Resilience with the City of Oakland; DJ Ron Reeser \n\n\n\nTake action locally on climate change in Oakland through art\, community\, and organizing at OMCA. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule: \n\n\n\n5–8 pm Off the Grid Service (10th Street) \n\n\n\n5–9 pm Sustainability and Resilience with the City of Oakland  (Garden) \n\n\n\n6–8  pm Extinction Rebellion (Garden) \n\n\n\n6–8 pm Music by DJ Ron Reeser (Amphitheater) \n\n\n\nOMCA hosts Extinction Rebellion (XR) and the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team to share how we can take action on climate change in Oakland through art\, community\, and organizing. \n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion invites you to screen print and paint climate justice designs\, interact with their street theater performers and large puppets\, which are often used at protest actions\, and view climate visual art and performances meant to spark reflection\, discussion and action. Learn how to get involved in the climate justice movement as well as local environmental stewardship in the Bay Area with XR and other partner organizations.  \n\n\n\nSustainable Oakland will share how you can help the City of Oakland mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis in ways that improve racial equity across Oakland. The City’s 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan seeks to transition all buildings in Oakland to 100% electric by 2040\, and residents are invited to shape how this will unfold. Meet the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team and discover how electrification improves home health and safety and what supportive services are available to help residents make the transition to an all-electric home.  \n\n\n\nEnjoy music by DJ Ron Reeser from 6 to 8 pm.  \n\n\n\nAbout the City’s Sustainability and Resilience Team\n\n\n\nThe team fosters collaboration with staff across all City Departments and with community leaders and experts on equitable climate change mitigation and adaptation.  \n\n\n\nAbout Extinction Rebellion (XR)\n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion\, or XR for short\, is a decentralized\, international and politically non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.  \n\n\n\nXR uses Nonviolent Direct Action (NVDA)\, otherwise known as civil disobedience\, to put pressure on the government to act on climate change. We see NVDA as the only remaining tactical option\, as our government has continuously failed at legal and conventional means to make the needed changes to avert mass catastrophe. Nonviolent action attracts attention to our movement\, disrupts business as usual\, and puts authorities in an ethical dilemma.  \n\n\n\nXR is a grassroots organization powered by regular people. We don’t believe that hierarchical structures of organization are a best practice in achieving our goals. Everyone is welcome!  \n\n\n\nXR San Francisco Bay Area works in small semi-autonomous groups\, which generally fall under two categories: affinity groups and working groups. \n\n\n\nAbout Friday Nights:\n\n\n\nReconnect with family\, friends\, and community at OMCA every Friday night. These free events provide a gathering place to come together each week\, including live music\, hands-on activities\, and Off the Grid food trucks. It is also a tool for teaching\, community building and healing. People of all colors\, ethnicities\, genders\, and ages have been brought to tears upon arrival while taking photos and videos\, speaking to the homeowner and neighbors\, and reading the names of the women. The mural has quickly become a powerful centerpiece of this community\, a destination for meeting\, gathering\, remembering\, and looking forward with hope and determination to advance the women’s legacy. \n\n\n\nWOMP honors The Black woman As God. It reminds us the Black woman is to be celebrated. An art piece so unapologetically huge\, one can’t look at it without looking up to Black women. Stand in front of the women and feel the power and the love. \n\n\n\nAbout Jilchristina Vest \n\n\n\nJilchristina Vest was born and raised in Chicago. In 1986\, at 19\, she moved to San Francisco. Don’t miss a dynamic live show reminiscent of shoegaze and alternative rock of the ‘90s\, filled with a mixture of ethereal vocals\, swelling drums\, and atmospheric guitars. \n\n\n\nAbout see night \n\n\n\nsee night is a San Francisco indie-rock 4-piece\, fronted by singer-songwriter Linda Sao with drummer Cory Aboud\, guitarist Pat Andrews\, and bassist AJ Marquez. Cathartic songs delivered with haunting vocals\, swelling drums\, and atmospheric guitars straddle somewhere between ‘90s indie-rock and woozy shoegaze. After their two self-released EPs\, stateside band tours\, and EU/UK solo tours\, the band’s first vinyl was put out by Pavement’s Bob Nastanovich—the “Eloquence” 7-inch on his Brokers Tip Records. 2022 saw a return to touring with Vancouver’s The Pack A.D. and a third EU solo tour. 2023 will see the release of a Nashville-recorded album of pandemic bedroom songs that Nastanovich describes as “glorious” and continued touring. \n\n\n\nAbout DJ Karlita \n\n\n\nA Nicaragüense-American born and raised in the Bay Area\, Karlita has spread her wings artistically as a performer\, competitor\, and community organizer. From her community\, she’s known as a freestyle dancer. Throughout her dance career\, she’s taught and traveled with organizations such All The Way Live Foundation and done residencies in Tanzania\, Uganda\, and Senegal. From these travels\, the love she has for music has been an exploration over the years from disco\, funk\, hip hop\, Afrobeats\, and Latin grooves. Karlita simply views DJing as a musical love letter to give back to her community. \n\n\n\nAccessibility  \n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. DESCRIPTION:Spotlight Sundays: Undocumented Heart\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVoting is integral to a healthy democracy. However\, low voter turnout\, misinformation\, and disillusionment are widespread. Join us for this OMCA program that will provide valuable voter information for the upcoming November 8 General Election\, while centering creativity\, inspiration\, and joy. \n\n\n\nSchedule  \n\n\n\n12–2 pm  Screen Printing | Koret Plaza\, Lower Level \n\n\n\n1–2 pm  Voting Workshop | California Room\, Lower Level \n\n\n\nStarting at 12 pm at Koret Plaza\, artists Lena Wolff and Hope Meng who are featured in OMCA’s Hella Feminist exhibition will conduct a screen printing activity with their graphic “VOTE” posters. The VOTE posters are part of a free public art and civic engagement project that initially began in 2017 in response to the political climate in the United States. The current posters on view in Hella Feminist were designed to urge people to vote in the 2022 midterms for meaningful reasons related to social and environmental justice. There will be free giveaways of posters and other screen printed objects. Visitors are encouraged to bring clothing\, totes\, or other fabric items to screenprint with the artist’s “VOTE for Democracy” design. \n\n\n\nAt 1 pm in the California Room\, join us for a workshop led by Becca Horwitz\, Grassroots Organizer of Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte that will explore how we can center joy and community in voting. The workshop will address issues on the ballot that are vital to the health and wellbeing of our communities\, aiming to demystify confusing language of some of the ballot measures while helping the public develop the tools to discern accurate information about candidates and policies. \n\n\n\nFree poster download link. \n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events

The inspiration for this offering is rooted in Mexico’s annual November 1st celebration of Día de los Angelitos\, or Day of the Little Angels\, which honors the lives of children who briefly lived on this earth. This feast is in conjunction with Mexico’s annual two day Dia de los Muertos celebration\, or Day of the Dead celebration\, of November 1st and 2nd. Though the death of a child brings deep loss and pain\, the Día de los Angelitos feast is rooted in the healing sentiment that one has gained an angel in heaven.  \n\n\n\nAltars\, known as ofrendas\, are created in the home or on children’s graves with vibrant decorations and offerings of toys\, sweets\, flowers\, favorite foods\, and personal objects that brought pleasure in life.  \n\n\n\nWith these traditions in mind\, we of the Día de los Muertos Volunteer Committee of the Oakland Museum of California\, have created this ofrenda to express feelings of compassion on behalf of our communities for the loss of these young lives and to celebrate the joy they brought in life. \n\n\n\nOakland Museum of California Comité del Día de los Muertos  \n\n\n\nLuz Alvarez Martínez\, Chrissy Cano\, Bea Carrillo-Hocker\, Juanita Chávez\, Carlos Cil\, Alicia Díaz\, Isaac Emrick\, Angelita M. The group is composed of women from diverse backgrounds that have been influenced by various Mariachi artists as well as by their own family roots in Mariachi and individual interests. Their bond comes from their experience in the Mariachi circuit and their strong focus on education; members range from having Bachelors\, Masters\, and Doctorate degrees. Each member has a professional career during the week and indulges their mariachi enthusiasm during the weekends.  \n\n\n\nMariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano has performed at many private parties and local community events. Through their passion and love for Mariachi music\, the ladies strive on leaving an indelible mark as part of their history. Mariachi Femenil Orgullo Mexicano is honored to lead by example and represent Mexican Culture\, the Mariachi tradition\, and Women in the Arts. \n\n\n\nBallet Folklórico Mexicano \n\n\n\nFounded in 1967 by Carlos Moreno-Samaniego\, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano has achieved recognition both in the United States and in Mexico. In 1980\, the Mexican consulate in San Francisco named the company the official ambassador for ongoing cultural activities with Mexico. It has held that distinction for over forty years during which time it regularly conducts tours in Mexican cities such as Guadalajara\, Oaxaca\, Aguascalientes\, and Durango. Drawing on the artistic variety of Mexico’s different regions\, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano has a dance repertory of 120 pieces. Many of these are presented in their traditional form while others have been restaged to include artistic elements from more contemporary choreography. In this way\, the indigenous rhythms of Tarascan Indian dances from central Mexico stand in sharp contrast to the Spanish military and courtship dances from that region. Similarly the African influences that characterize dances from the Gulf of Mexico are juxtaposed by Mexican polkas that mark the influence of eastern European from the north. In her review of the company\, Jennifer Fisher\, the celebrated dance critic for the Los Angeles Times\, noted that the Ballet “has much appeal. They are tightly rehearsed and (their) choreography is inventive.” \n\n\n\nThe “Dia de Muertos” production originated in 2005. In this production the BFM shares many of the danzas and more ritualistic pieces which pay homage to those who have passed on. It shows how Dia de Muertos is a celebration of the life of loved ones. A time to share the wonders our loved ones enjoyed. \n\n\n\nJavier Navarrette’s Socially Distant Friends \n\n\n\nThe group Javier Navarrette’s Socially Distant Friends is a compilation of some of the Bay Area’s finest musicians/band leaders from many popular Bay Area dance bands from the Bay’s thriving Latin\, Salsa\, and Jazz scenes.
