It is also a tool for teaching\, community building and healing. People of all colors\, ethnicities\, genders\, and ages have been brought to tears upon arrival while taking photos and videos\, speaking to the homeowner and neighbors\, and reading the names of the women. The mural has quickly become a powerful centerpiece of this community\, a destination for meeting\, gathering\, remembering\, and looking forward with hope and determination to advance the women’s legacy. \n\n\n\nWOMP honors The Black woman As God. It reminds us the Black woman is to be celebrated. An art piece so unapologetically huge\, one can’t look at it without looking up to Black women. Stand in front of the women and feel the power and the love. \n\n\n\nAbout Jilchristina Vest \n\n\n\nJilchristina Vest was born and raised in Chicago. In 1986\, at 19\, she moved to San Francisco. In 2000\, after earning degrees in Black Studies\, Women’s Studies\, and Education from SFSU and USF\, she bought a historic Victorian in West Oakland\, CA\, known for its rich history of activism and legacy of the Black Panther Party. During COVID\, she founded\, produced\, and curated the West Oakland Mural Project\, a community-based art and history project that gave birth to the 2000 sqft “Women of the Black Panther Party” Mural on the side of her home and the Mini Museum @ the Mural on the first floor. Jil is a known Kindness Queen. Joy Junkie. Justice Warrior and a Fierce Activist. \n\n\n\nAccessibility  \n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community.
