In 1994\, a small group of visionary artists and community members in Oakland approached OMCA to organize the first community-based Día de los Muertos celebration. The first celebration linked a living tradition that uplifts a deep indigenous way of recognizing those who came before us to connect and reconnect our communities with our ancestors and ancestral ways of being. \n\n\n\nSince the first celebration\, OMCA’s Día de los Muertos has grown and revitalized our relationships\, bringing together communities from Oakland and across the Bay Area. Our celebration brings together Danza\, diverse artists and traditional ofrenda-makers\, pan de muerto and tlaxcalli (tortilla) makers and music from diverse regions in Mexico and Latin America. Our annual celebration brings the best of our traditional offerings to honor our dearly departed loved ones and ancestors. The first celebration planted the seed. Offering altars\, known as ofrendas\, are created in the home or on children’s graves with vibrant decorations and offerings of toys\, sweets\, flowers\, favorite foods\, and personal objects that brought pleasure in life. Originally from Mexico\, both were musicians from a young age. Banda 300 includes 16 members from various states in the Republic of Mexico and are known for their unique accordion sound. She was born and raised in Juárez\, México and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. Over the last decade in the Bay Area she has released two albums of original songs written in Spanish and English and has been highlighted often by NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series\, and a documentary film about her was released in 2020. Her music often tells stories of family\, migration\, and home\, and has led her to perform with other prominent performers such as Joan Baez\, Natalia Lafourcade\, and the San Francisco Symphony. Diana received the 2023 Music Award Grant from the Gerbode Foundation to record a new album to be released in 2025. \nDiana Gameros es cantautora y compositora. Her work can be found in Academy of American Poets Poem-a-Day\, The Rumpus\, World Literature Today\, the Los Angeles Times\, amongst others. She believes that all Black lives matter and that Palestine will be free and will resist white supremacy until liberation is realized. Her poetry is published widely in both print and online journals. She earned a BFA in Pictorial Art and a BA in French from San José State University\, served as Creative Ambassador of the San José Office of Cultural Affairs\, and was awarded a Creative Corps Initiative grant from the California Arts Council and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She speaks on art subjects at various locations in the Bay Area\, including the OLLI programs at Santa Clara University\, Dominican College\, San Francisco State\, and the Fromm Institute. Avril has a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and taught English and Humanities at local colleges. Join us for a special nature walk led by OMCA’s Curator of Natural Science\, Ryder Diaz.  \n\n\n\nThe tour will begin at the Mid Level ticketing desk and then will move through the OMCA Garden to learn more about the habitat in our own backyard. Next\, Ryder will lead the group out of our 12th Street entrance to learn more about the natural history of Lake Merritt and its surrounding creeks. Without venturing too far off\, the group will be prompted to notice the various birds and critters along the way! The walk will conclude back at OMCA’s Gallery of California Natural Sciences with a chance to integrate what visitors saw during the tour. Gallery Chats put a twist on the traditional museum tour by encouraging meaningful conversations and fresh interpretations to connect with the artwork\, artifacts\, and stories in our galleries. \n\n\n\nGallery Chats take place in our Special Exhibitions and our Galleries of California Art\, History\, and Natural Sciences every Saturday from 1 to 3 pm and are included with Museum and Special Exhibition admission.
