SUMMARY:Friday Nights at OMCA | Krudas Cubensi & Drag Storytime with Per Sia
DESCRIPTION:Basketry Demonstration & Conversation with Jennifer Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk)\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA | Live Music with Krudas Cubensi\, Drag Storytime with Per Sia\, Pride Art Making\, Gallery Chats\, and DJ set with Karlita\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome out with Pride to Friday Nights at OMCA! Krudas Cubensi brings a blend of rap and poetry and Afro-Cuban music beats\, like salsa\, rumba\, and Jazz from their album “They/Them Les Elles” and uplifts the resiliency of non-binary and trans people. The album being a collaboration between Krudas\, Greg Landau and many local and international artists is an interwoven sonic tapestry that inspires reflection and action in the service of a better future for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Drag Storytime keeps our attentions hooked on the very roots of Pride as drag artist Per Sia gives a joyful reading of Joanna McClintick’s ‘Twas the Night Before Pride\, a story that emphasizes the beauty of families of all compositions and all inclusive love in the face of challenging movements such as the Stonewall Riots and AIDS marches.  \n\n\n\nKeep the celebration going in creative self-expression with hands-on art-making! Make your own Pride flag and rainbow dancing ribbon\, while learning about different LGBTQ+ flags and what they represent. And if you’re feeling really Proud add your voice to the insightful Gallery Chats about the social change makers and artists in our Special Exhibition\, Por el Pueblo: The Legacy and Influence of Malaquías Montoya. SUMMARY:Friday Nights at OMCA with Orchestra Gold
DESCRIPTION:Basketry Demonstration & Conversation with Jennifer Bates (Northern Sierra Mewuk)\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA | Live Music by Orchestra Gold\, TropiCali Dancehall Lesson w/ Aimee\, DJ set by Teao Sense\, Gallery Chats\, Care Van: Personal Care Stations\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for another sensational installation of Friday Nights at OMCA! This Friday\, OMCA is honored to welcome Orchestra Gold to the OMCA Garden stage. Spearheaded by the dynamic Mariam Diakite—known for her raw\, hypnotic vocals and poetic Bambara lyrics—Orchestra Gold pays homage to Malian musical traditions while crafting a fierce new sound with heavy swinging rhythms\, a funky fresh brass section\, and cosmic guitar licks. Their most recent album\, Medicine\, mobilizes dance-inducing music to invoke the spirit and spread healing and community. DJ Teao Sense and their highly eclectic stylings with music from all over the world also celebrate how our diversity can create powerful and groovy waves.  \n\n\n\nThe TropiCali Dancehall Lesson w/ Aimee will keep your mind and body activated as this workshop focuses on not only the signature steps of Dancehall\, but also its culture\, history\, and context. As you sweat it out on the dance floor\, don’t miss your opportunity this election year to garner community care and civic awareness with Care Van at OMCA by artist Autumn Breon. In partnership with OMCA and For Freedoms\, Care Van will be providing free chair massages from Hit the Spot and a chance to bedazzle your smile with tooth gems from Dulce Diente on a first come first served basis\, as well as a mindful coloring station. Care Van will also be inviting visitors to anonymously record their questions about ballot measures and voter barriers which will be answered at a town hall on August 18 at OMCA.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to an outstanding event experience\, every Friday Nights at OMCA also offers guests a well-rounded gallery experience with Gallery Chats. Oakland’s most exciting arts and culture brand is partnering with OMCA to host the welcome party for their Annual Afrobeats at the Lake Festival. Afrobeats Oakland shares a taste of their main festival by coloring Friday Nights with a melding of various African cultures\, music\, and dance. Between the dance tutorials and dance party\, the Ethiopian tea ceremony\, the live DJ set and the performances from Juan G\, KOKO\, Christina Alexandria\, Asaba\, and other special guests\, OMCA is set to welcome guests of all ages and backgrounds to a Friday Nights like none other! \n\n\n\nOur Gallery of California Art will also be activated with a Friday Night classic\, Sketchboard Live Figure Drawing.  \n\n\n\nOMCA welcomes all skill levels\, including those who have never drawn before and want to try drawing. Art supplies and clipboards will be available for use\, and your artwork will be yours to take home or exchange with others. A costumed model representing the diversity of the Bay Area will be posing in the Gallery of California Art for times ranging from 2 to 20 minutes. Since drawing will take place in the gallery\, please be mindful of the space and bring only the following media from home: sketchbooks (max size 9×12 inches) and pre-sharpened enclosed graphite or charcoal pencils. \n\n\n\nSketching in the gallery is included with the price of general Museum Gallery access and free for Museum Members.  \n\n\n\nIn addition to an outstanding event experience\, every Friday Nights at OMCA also offers guests a well-rounded gallery experience with Gallery Chats. Unlike the traditional museum tour\, Gallery Chats invites visitors to chat\, ask questions and connect with our OMCA facilitators who combine content knowledge with lived experience to encourage meaningful dialogue and fresh interpretations of our exhibitions. It aims to utilize these newfound spaces to create opportunities for cultural diversity\, deeper understanding of the African continent and encourage dialogue among its diaspora\, all while ushering in a new approach to public celebration and togetherness. \n\n\n\n\n\nSketchboard is a BIPOC figure drawing collective\, curating eclectic\, diverse\, and affordable events in the Bay Area over the last 10 years. Their mission is to feature the bodies of people at the intersection of multiple identities\, offer living wages to our art models\, and create an inclusive environment for the artists in Sketchboard’s community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOff the Grid Food Truck Lineup\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid is sponsored by the Oakland Museum Women’s Board and Bank of America. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReturn to Events
