Through workshops participants recreate objects in clay that police have mistaken for guns. This Is Not A Gun is hosted by artists\, activists\, healers\, and mindfulness collaborators. \n\n\n\nArtistic Collaboration in Grassroots Performance with Andreína Maldonado (Workshop in Spanish only. English translation headsets will be available)Participants will learn about different somatics and artistic methodologies that can be used when working and collaborating with grassroots immigrant communities. The group will  explore concepts such as Popular Education as it relates to space facilitation\, leadership and collective knowledge; Body Somatics as it relates to wellness\, sustainability and resilience; and collective Art-Making as it relates to storytelling\, lyricism\, and movement expression. \n\n\n\nNews as Justice: Sharing Community Stories of Healing with the Oakland Lowdown How might we reframe local news as a force for liberation and elevate narratives of healing from our communities? This two-part workshop will explore tools from journalism that can help us ask important questions and tell stories that build power and agency. Participants will practice interviewing techniques and hear firsthand from community health advocates in Oakland. The goal is to facilitate a continuous interview that the Oakland Lowdown will record to produce a video segment of the iterative conversation. \n\n\n\nFuture IDs Art & Justice Leadership Cohort with Dr. Luis Garcia\, Rebecca Jackson\, Kirn Kim\, Phillip Lester\, Emiliano Lopez\, Sabrina Reid\, Jessica Tully\, and Gregory Sale This forum focuses on the most recent iteration of Future IDs\, a social-impact initiative about justice reform and second chances after incarceration. It will include a conversation on how the Cohort cultivates system-impacted and allied changemakers\, encouraging and enabling them to generate collaborative and individually-led advocacy programs as they strive to become more horizontal in their shared knowledge\, decision making\, and work together. \n\n\n\nCreando Espacio/ Making Space\, A Collaborative Community Based Project with Hector Dionicio MendozaCreando Espacio is a participatory art installation by Bay Area based artist\, Hector Dionicio Mendoza in collaboration with Amalia Mesa-Bains\, Viviana Paredes\, and Steve White.  As a child\, Mendoza grew up with a great appreciation for the importance of faith\, ritual\, and alternative healing traditions as practiced by his grandfather\, a fifth-generation curandero (shaman).  In Mexico\, as well as Central and South America\, the curandera/o plays an important role to many people embarking on the long and challenging journey to El Norte/The North (the United States)\, providing blessings and protection before they depart in search of a better way of life. Creando Espacio draws on Mendoza’s childhood memories creating an outdoor dwelling that modernizes his grandfather’s healing space in Mexico. \n\n\n\nPerformances\n\n\n\nMaroon is My Favorite Color (excerpt) by Keisha TurnerA movement-based exploration that asks\, what alternatives are there to the disorienting\, generational overexposure to extractive and exploitative labor? This embodied journey is an invitation to other Diasporic Africans to consider how we might “maroon” – that is\, self-emancipate – in a contemporary context.    \n\n\n\n칠성 새남굿- Chilseong SaenamGut (Duringut): Ritual for Sickness by Dohee LeeIn order to heal\, Dohee Lee calls upon a ritual for sickness\, illness\, and destruction from Jeju Island\, her hometown. This ritual is for facing and naming challenges\, for purging destructive and monstrous spirits (Heomaengyee-허맹이 *)\, white supremacy\, and patriarchal culture\,and inviting back vital spirits (Chilseong-칠성신 **). \n\n\n\nAbout the emcee\n\n\n\nAlex Bledsoe will emcee the event and help us shape the day with her insight and vision. This material speaks to Angela Davis’ story and the practice of preserving Black legacies more broadly. This discussion will delve into some of the challenges posed by social and institutional erasure and will consider ways to gather\, sustain\, and give life to Black material culture both tangible and intangible. The program will explore the multifaceted methods of memory work\, including documenting social movements\, objects as memory\, and strategies for keeping Black history alive.The panel includes activist and archivist Lisbet Tellefsen; Odette Pollar of Rainbow Sign\, a Black centered Bay Area cultural icon\, performance venue\, political organizing nexus and a legendary cafe; and Damien McDuffie\, founder and creative director of Black Terminus\, a creative studio and augmented reality platform for Black art and the Black cultural archive. She has been the Executive Director of the non-profit\, The Plant Exchange\, the largest plant swap in the country for the last 15 years. Growing up in St. Augustine\, Florida\, he was immersed in a vibrant local surf culture that conceived his passion for the ocean and nature.  \n\n\n\nAfter moving to the West Coast to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication and Advertising from California State University\, Long Beach\, David connected with a community of Black surfers that introduced him to the historical context of surfing in Africa.  \n\n\n\nThese formative experiences\, which connect his lifelong passion and ancestral roots\, spawned the creative inspiration and community-based collaborations that have bloomed into Wade in the Water. \n\n\n\nBeyin Abraha – Executive Director\, Wade in the Water \n\n\n\nBorn in Ethiopia\, of Eritrean descent\, and raised in Toronto\, Beyin’s introduction to surfing came through a college roommate. He’s been hooked ever since.  \n\n\n\nIn his day to day life\, Abraha works with Beats by Dre as a Mechanical Product Design Engineer specialized on in-ear headphones. He has also enjoyed similar positions at Apple with the iPhone design team as well as at Tesla working on the iconic Model 3 electric vehicle in the past. \n\n\n\nAs an active community member\, Abraha is the project manager and founding member of Sofly Surf School\, an organization that gives free surf lessons in Huntington Beach\, and holds the position of vice-chair on the board for PaddleforPeace\, an organization offering holistic approaches to introducing people to the practice of surfing and protecting the ocean.  \n\n\n\nAfter being contacted by David to be featured in Wade in the Water (2022)\, Beyin’s passion for surfing and community connections soon saw him transition into an integral role of bringing the project to life on shoot days as well as behind the scenes making sure things are on track. \n\n\n\nKayiita Johansson – Founder\, Black.Surfers \n\n\n\nKayiita Johansson was born and raised in Minnesota. After living in Texas and NYC\, Johnson moved to northern California in 2016 and lived there until settling in Oakland\, California in 2021. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford. Formerly a product manager for Google Nest and a semiconductor sales and firmware engineer at Texas Instruments\, he currently works as a product manager at a self-driving car company. Johansson has been surfing since 2014 and said he was drawn to the sport from the feeling of flowing with nature. It was an inevitable sport for him\, he said\, after spending much time skateboarding\, swimming and body surfing throughout his childhood. They run a 600-person digital community chat\, host surf trips\, and advocate for policy change to remove the systemic barriers that prevent Black people from enjoying surfing. \n\n\n\nAdriana Dominique Guerrero-Nardone\, Executive Director – Brown Girl Surf She/They/Ella/ Elle \n\n\n\nAdriana is the current Executive Director of Brown Girl Surf. Adriana joined the team in 2020 as the Associate Director\, and brought over 15 years of experience in education and youth development.  \n\n\n\nAs Executive Director\, Adriana’s work and passion includes working to build a more inclusive surf culture both locally and nationally through community programming\, collaboration with ally organizations\, and advocacy for equitable and inclusive coastal policies\, all while centering joy as a form of community building and healing. \n\n\n\nA common thread that weaves Adriana’s professional aspirations and beliefs together is her pursuit of social justice with a youth development-lens and community-based approach. Over the last decade\, Adriana has worked in a variety of capacities in the nonprofit sector across the globe with communities ranging in their socioeconomic\, cultural\, and language backgrounds.
