(OAKLAND, CA)—With fall in full swing and the holidays around the corner, the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is gearing up for a season of celebrations in Noviembre and Diciembre. Programs and events range from family-friendly traditions honoring the Bay Area’s diverse communities to extended holiday hours at the Museum, meaning more time to enjoy special exhibitions, galleries, and shopping holiday sales.

Experience intimate seasonal Viernes Nights @ OMCA as the program enters the winter season. The extremely popular weekly event continues to thrive with exhibition-themed activities such as poster-making inspired by special exhibition All Power to the People: Black Panthers at 50, as well as the Makers & Tasters series including holiday activities like cookie decorating demonstrations and ornament making. Every Viernes from 5–9 pm, take advantage of half-price admission to view OMCA’s galleries and exhibitions.

The 3rd Annual Indian Market at Oakland Museum of California will be held on Noviembre 4 and 5, featuring jewelry, baskets, prints, and other modern interpretations of Indian artistry. For more information, visit museumca.org.

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month—and just in time for the holidays—shop the third annual Indian Market at OMCA featuring jewelry, baskets, prints, and other modern interpretations of Indian artistry. On Viernes after 5 pm, enjoy the market and half-off Museum admission during Viernes Nights @ OMCA, featuring Off the Grid food trucks, live music, family activities, and more. First Sundays @ OMCA

Check out the Galleries of California Art, History, and Natural Sciences. See the new exhibition All Power to the People: Black Panthers at 50, exploring the lasting legacy of this revolutionary, Oakland-based group. The whole family will love Bees: Tiny Insect, Big Impact in the Gallery of California Natural Sciences. Check out the Architecture Tour at 1 pm, and the California History Tour at 1 pm. Pick up a treat for yourself or a loved one in the OMCA Store. Enjoy a lunch or snack in Blue Oak café. Suggested donation: $5 per person. Your contribution helps us provide access to others. 

Tour | Architecture of the Museum

Experience OMCA’s remarkable mid-century modernist landmark building with the guidance of the Museum’s expert members of the Council on Architecture. This tour shares with you just a few of the highlights of the incredible building, from views of Lake Merritt and downtown Oakland from atop a three-tiered roof garden to the serene Koi Pond, and a truly Californian indoor/outdoor design that still delights and attracts visitors today. Designed in 1969 by Kevin Roche, with landscaping by Dan Kiley, the Museum recently completed a major renovation and expansion project overseen by San Francisco-based firm Mark Cavagnero Associates, which honors Roche and Kiley’s original vision of a vibrant urban park and public space. Free as a part of First Sundays @ OMCA. Meet in front of the Ticketing Desk on Level 2.

OMCA Family | Celebrate Diwali—Festival of Lights

Celebrate Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Watch and participate in folk dance by Sahiyar Dance Troupe and enjoy a South Asian a cappella music performance by Stanford Raagapella! Join the author of Lights, Camera, Diwali, Dr. Amita Roy Shah, for a special story time at 2 pm where she will read and autograph her new book. Enjoy a demonstration of diya making on a potter’s wheel, get a henna tattoo on your hand, color rangoli designs, and create your own clay lamp to take home. This program is presented in partnership with the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. Included with Museum admission. Admission for Members is always free. No reservations necessary. All ages welcome.

Viernes Nights @ OMCA features extended Museum hours, in-gallery programming, a beer garden from Blue Oak café, live music, dancing, hands-on family activities, and more. Gallery admission is half-off for adults, free for ages 18 and under. Event parking in the Museum garage is $5. VISITOR INFORMATION
Museum admission is $15.95 general; $10.95 seniors and students with valid ID, $6.95 youth ages 9 to 17, and free for children 8 and under and Members. OMCA offers onsite underground parking, with validation for Museum visitors, and is conveniently located one block from the Lake Merritt BART station, on the corner of 10th Street and Oak Street.
