The manner of one’s death determined one’s place in the afterlife. The dead were buried with the artifacts of daily life and offerings of food and drink. Festivals and altars dedicated to the dead enhanced connection and mutual assistance between the living and the dead.  \n\n\n\nThe European beliefs and rituals of death were rooted in Christianity. The Spanish conquest of Mexico occurred in 1521. The evangelizing Catholic clergy attempted to erase the belief systems of the Native peoples. In time\, the Native funerary rituals were incorporated into the Catholic November 1st feast of All Saints Day and the November 2nd feast of All Souls. Today the offering altars for the dead\, the ofrendas\, installed during the Day of the Dead festivities display both pre-Columbian Native funerary practices and Catholic liturgy. \n\n\n\nMay this installation dedicated to our family ancestors inspire thoughts on the contributions of departed loved ones. \n\n\n\nThis installation was created in conjunction with the Oakland Museum of California’s annual commemoration of the Day of the Dead celebration by members of the museum’s volunteer Día de los Muertos Committee.
