Jackie produces Good Medicine Comedy\, an all-Native comedy show which has sold out venues in the Bay Area and beyond. Her joyful\, community-centered sets create the perfect soundtrack for dancing\, gathering\, and celebrating together throughout the evening. \n\n\n\nTeachers and school leaders are specially invited to join OMCA’s Annual Fall Teacher Night for an evening of connecting with fellow educators\, discovering museum resources\, and exploring the galleries—including an introduction to the Gallery of California History and themes from the newly opened BeHere/1942 exhibition. We will screen the documentary Alice Street\, directed by Spencer Wilkinson\, which narrates how a neighborhood mural on 14th and Alice Street catalyzed a multiracial coalition to rally in protection of cultural arts and livability in Oakland.  \n\n\n\nGroups featured in the film from the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts will open and close the program\, including a drum offering by Bantaba Drum Call to call in ancestors and a performance by Dimensions Dance Theater to root in Black joy and resistance—hearkening back to Howard’s many years spent honing her dance skills with Oakland dance legend Ruth Beckford before immersing in the visual arts. Her multidisciplinary practice spans performance\, curation\, television\, and storytelling\, presented in spaces ranging from local bars to major museums\, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Oakland Museum of California. A graduate of the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, she is a co-founder of Drag Story Hour and an educator with Children’s After School Arts\, with work featured on KQED Arts\, National Public Radio\, and CNN. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n About Mildred Howard\n \n Mildred Howard began making art influenced by textiles and African Diasporic dance as early as the 1970s. Howard’s studio became a space for experimentation\, where her work has referenced both personal history and collective\, generational experiences—from World War I to her family’s roots in the Great Migration. Howard’s monumental public artworks—found across the Bay Area—have highlighted often overlooked histories\, from the Black ship workers of Hunters Point to the musicians who defined San Francisco jazz. OMCA’s exhibition Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory brings together Howard’s renowned collages\, found-object sculptures\, and immersive installations that explore memory\, identity\, and the African American experience. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n About Adrian Burrell\n \n Adrian Burrell is a multimedia artist whose practice includes photography\, film\, installation\, and experimental media. His work examines the intersections of race\, class\, and intergenerational dynamics\, inviting moments where collective storytelling creates space for remembrance. Burrell’s work has been the subject of the recent solo exhibitions Venus Blues at the Minnesota Street Project Foundation (2023)\, and Sugarcane and Lightning pt 3 at the San José ICA\, CA (2022)\, each investigating his own family history—archival\, speculative\, and fictional—as a means of understanding Black life\, history\, resistance\, and liberation in America. On the Garden Stage\, Oakland singer-songwriter Shanté brings her soulful sound to the Museum with a powerful live performance blending smooth R&B\, heartfelt storytelling\, and uplifting messages. Over in the Amphitheater\, DJ Shell Heart keeps the music going with a high-energy mix of Hip-Hop\, R&B\, Afrobeats\, and classic Bay Area rap and party anthems. \n\n\n\nFamilies can also gather in the Garden for Drag Storytime with Per Sia\, San Francisco’s Drag Laureate\, featuring a reading of Hazel’s Best Day: A Story of Community\, Accessibility\, and Pride in Being Yourself. Guests of all ages are invited to make their own mini home inspired by Mildred Howard’s house sculptures\, using colorful materials to create a tiny home that tells their story. \n\n\n\nThe Museum welcomes visitors to an evening of conversation\, music\, creativity\, and connection—rooted in Black art\, community\, and collective imagination. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelist Bios\n\n\n\nMildred Howard began making art influenced by textiles and African Diasporic dance as early as the 1970s. Howard’s studio became a space for experimentation\, where her work has referenced both personal history and collective\, generational experiences—from World War I to her family’s roots in the Great Migration. Howard’s monumental public artworks—found across the Bay Area—have highlighted often overlooked histories\, from the Black ship workers of Hunters Point to the musicians who defined San Francisco jazz. OMCA’s exhibition Mildred Howard: Poetics of Memory brings together Howard’s renowned collages\, found-object sculptures\, and immersive installations that explore memory\, identity\, and the African American experience. \n\n\n\nAdrian Burrell is a multimedia artist whose practice includes photography\, film\, installation\, and experimental media. His work examines the intersections of race\, class\, and intergenerational dynamics\, inviting moments where collective storytelling creates space for remembrance. Burrell’s work has been the subject of the recent solo exhibitions Venus Blues at the Minnesota Street Project Foundation (2023)\, and Sugarcane and Lightning pt 3 at the San José ICA\, CA (2022)\, each investigating his own family history — archival\, speculative\, and fictional — as a means of understanding Black life\, history\, resistance\, and liberation in America. A third-generation Oakland artist and US Marine Corps veteran\, Burrell received his BFA in Film from the San Francisco Art Institute\, CA and MFA from Stanford University’s Department of Art & Art History\, where he was also a visiting artist with Stanford’s Institute for Diversity in Arts (2022). \n\n\n\nL. Autumn King serves as Senior Director of Marketing\, Communications\, and Visitor Experience for Oakland Museum of California. With over 25 years of experience working in communications in varied capacities\, including media relations\, public relations\, public information\, marketing\, and public engagement\, her professional career has been primarily in nonprofit management and local government. A transplant\, Autumn loves Oakland where she works\, volunteers\, organizes\, and lives. Last West was born from OMCA’s archive of Lange’s images and notebooks and returns to bring this legendary Bay Area photographer’s stories to life. We will travel with Lange as actors perform the journey outlined in her road journals and oral histories\, and witness again the California we experience today. Set against a stunning projected backdrop of Lange’s photographs\, this offering is a meditation on witness\, migration\, and time.  \n\n\n\nThis production is a culmination of a weekend of programming centering and celebrating Dorothea Lange’s life and work. Her fifth collection\, Come Bite\, is forthcoming from Milkweed Editions in April 2027. She served as the 2024–25 Poet Laureate of El Cerrito\, CA as a 2024 Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellow. She has taught at UC Berkeley\, UC Davis\, Saint Mary’s College\, and Whittier College\, and was a Fulbright Scholar at the Seamus Heaney Centre in Belfast\, Northern Ireland. Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange—originally written in the OMCA Archive— began as a collage poem commissioned by MoMA in 2020\, and has grown into an immersive theater piece. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n Ciera Eis | Director\n \n Ciera Eis (she/her) is a theatrical director who develops socio-political new work\, with an eye for the queer\, messy\, visceral\, and wildly funny. She has developed new work at Berkeley Repertory Theatre\, American Conservatory Theater\, Magic Theatre\, and Shotgun Players\, with recent directing credits including Love U: Queer New Musical (Z Space)\, Faust on 4Chan (The Ground Floor\, Berkeley Rep)\, and Circle Mirror Transformation (Custom Made Theatre). For five years she produced Berkeley Rep’s Ground Floor new-work residency\, and she has served as Artistic Director of both Custom Made Theatre Company and FaultLine Theater. Her debut collection\, Heart Like a Window\, Mouth Like a Cliff\, received a 2020 American Book Award. \nJosiah Luis Alderete: Josiah Luis Alderete is a full blooded Spanglish speaking Pocho. He is the curator and host of the long running monthly Latine reading series Speaking Axolotl and  is the author of two books of poetry “Baby Axolotls & Old Pochos(Black Freighter Press 2021) and the chapbook “Fuchi Faces de los Estados Jodidos”(For The Pueblo 2023).
