In her distinct figurative style\, she creates portraits of herself\, her friends\, and characters from her favorite Mexican sitcom ‘El Chavo del Ocho’. With large heads\, exaggerated facial features\, and peg-like extremities\, her characters are bright and colorful\, sometimes accompanied by symbolic imagery. An admirer of fashion\, Sotelo pays special attention to the clothing in her drawings\, devising festive outfits from her imagination or rendering apparel true to life. In her textile practice\, Sotelo combines painting\, weaving\, sewing\, and embroidery (Lulu has invented her own embroidery knots) on clothes\, and creates one-of-a-kind garments covered with her signature characters. Sotelo also makes her characters into plush dolls\, complete with costumes and removable hats. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Larry Randolph\n \n Larry Randolph works methodically\, using nature books or newspapers as reference material to create intricately detailed ecosystems or original comic book strips with elaborate story lines. A devotee of classic animation\, Randolph describes his own comics as “a soap opera in a cartoon comic.” He details the adventures of characters like the “Super High Power Team” and the “Wolse-Rode Family\,” where Randolph creates dramatic scenes of love and politics. Whether densely colored or black and white\, his gifted style of line work and shading make his figures appear animated. Randolph’s work was included in the Best American Comics of 2017. A master of multiple mediums\, Randolph is also an accomplished ceramicist. His rough hand-shaped whales\, doughnuts\, pies\, and roasted turkeys have been exhibited at art fairs and galleries internationally. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Jean McElvane\n \n Prior to joining NIAD\, Jean McElvane studied art and music at Contra Costa College. She also worked as an artist’s assistant. McElvane’s paintings and drawings tend toward realism\, but the majority of her work is in the craft field\, creating meticulously built fiber projects or using recycled found materials to build amazing objects that capture the essence of insects or creatures. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Gerald Wiggins\n \n When Gerald Wiggins makes art\, he is “not necessarily trying to say something to people. I’m just trying to make them happy\, because there is not enough happiness.” Wiggins’ depictions of human figures\, animal life\, and fantastical creatures are stunningly accomplished. Working with colored pencil\, marker\, graphite\, and watercolor\, as well as with digital printmaking software\, Wiggins’ drawings are uncluttered and precise and use a spare\, controlled line and careful coloring to convey detail. Wiggins also creates ceramic sculptures\, from frightening vampiric characters to a rotating cast of life-like city dwellers he calls “the crew.” Occasionally\, key portions of a figure or natural element are left unfinished\, or isolated parts are collected together in a single piece; these techniques add visual playfulness to his style. “I like the feeling of making something in your head that doesn’t exist\,” Wiggins says\, “to make it real.” He co-curated Shoerageous in 2014\, an exhibition featuring shoes in all colors\, shapes\, and sizes. Learn more about Wiggins in this video\, which debuted at Art Changes Lives 2017. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Donzell Lewis\n \n Donzell Lewis taught himself to knit by watching instructional videos on YouTube. From tiny bits of jewelry to yarn-bombing trees\, Lewis has become a master at his craft. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Donald Gruneisen\n \n Donald Gruneisen’s favorite subject matters include horror movies like Halloween\, old school Universal Studios monster movies like Dracula\, Frankenstein\, The Wolf Man\, and classic TV shows like The Munsters. Donald left CE in March of 2015 to pursue full-time employment\, but returned part-time in 2018 to resume his art making practice. Donald’s inspirations have grown to include The Beatles\, The Polar Express\, and colorful\, tie-dyed creatures. He is a big San Francisco Giants fan and a Grateful Dead enthusiast who often wears outfits celebrating these loves. Donald is a positive and peaceful presence in the studio\, full of warmth and good humor. Gruneisen’s artwork is characterized by his use of geometry to segment bodies and forms\, perhaps alluding to the mish-mash of parts that make up some of his favorite monsters. His movie monsters are typically depicted looking at the viewer or in profile – often inspired by movie posters and including titles in neat cursive. \n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExample Items\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nknitting 62 x 7” unique 2019\n\n\n\nknitted clothing on a found plastic/ vinyl doll 12 x 3 x 2” unique 2018\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nrecycled materials and paint 5 x 3 x 1” unique 2019

DESCRIPTION:OMCA Architecture Walk and Talk\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid | Youth vs. Apocalypse – Hip Hop & Climate Justice; DJ Siyah \n\n\n\nEngage in the climate justice movement through hip hop with Youth vs. Apocalypse. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule: \n\n\n\n5–8 pm – Off the Grid Service (10th Street) \n\n\n\n5:30–6:30 pm – Siyah (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\n6:30–7:30 pm – Youth Vs. Apocalypse (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\n7:30–8:30 pm – Siyah (Amphitheater stage) \n\n\n\nBring your poems\, songs\, speeches\, verses\, and more! Youth Vs Apocalypse (YVA) will host an open mic-style Community Showcase at OMCA for all ages to provide space to navigate through injustices we all face in our respective communities. Even if it’s your first time on the mic or you have experience performing\, we want to hear your voice! \n\n\n\nYVA believes we not only need to speak up about these issues\, but we also need to listen to each other’s experiences. By recognizing each other’s struggle\, our strength increases. And with this strength\, we can create a solution that not only benefits one community but all communities.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Youth vs. Apocalypse (YVA)\n\n\n\nYouth Vs. Apocalypse is a diverse group of young climate justice activists working together to lift the voices of youth\, in particular youth of color and working class youth. Their collective action aims to fight for a livable climate and an equitable\, sustainable\, and just world.  \n\n\n\nYVA started as a group of Oakland youth\, supported by adults in their community\, using direct action and lobbying to fight a proposed coal terminal in their city\, then expanded its focus to other climate justice issues. After a video with youth from YVA pushing Senator Feinstein to support the Green New Deal went viral\, YVA students organized press conferences\, gave interviews\, wrote Op Eds\, and developed a website. By September 2019\, YVA organized a crowd of 30\,000\, after working as a group to develop an intersectional set of targets and demands\, organizing transportation for thousands of students from around the Bay Area\, and connecting with dozens of labor and community groups\, many of whom took climate action for the first time. YVA youth have supported climate actions across the state\, taken leadership on local and statewide campaigns\, and continued their presence in national media. YVA was recently named by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as one of (and the only youth-led) YBCA 100. YVA is now a local group of young people who are impacting national conversations on climate. \n\n\n\nYVA expands and redefines who leads in the climate movement through peer-to peer community organizing that meets frontline young people where they are and supports their powerful\, strategic leadership\, whether they previously considered themselves “leaders” or “environmentalists” or not. Through YVA\, youth leaders also have the support to work collaboratively and in community\, building the broad coalition we need to achieve system-wide change. \n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nThe Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is committed to providing programs that are accessible\, welcoming\, and inclusive of our community. SUMMARY:Friday Nights at OMCA Featuring Extinction Rebellion Bay Area and Sustainability and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:OMCA Architecture Walk and Talk\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday Nights at OMCA with Off the Grid | Extinction Rebellion Bay Area and Sustainability and Resilience with the City of Oakland; DJ Ron Reeser \n\n\n\nTake action locally on climate change in Oakland through art\, community\, and organizing at OMCA. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule: \n\n\n\n5–8 pm Off the Grid Service (10th Street) \n\n\n\n5–9 pm Sustainability and Resilience with the City of Oakland  (Garden) \n\n\n\n6–8  pm Extinction Rebellion (Garden) \n\n\n\n6–8 pm Music by DJ Ron Reeser (Amphitheater) \n\n\n\nOMCA hosts Extinction Rebellion (XR) and the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team to share how we can take action on climate change in Oakland through art\, community\, and organizing. \n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion invites you to screen print and paint climate justice designs\, interact with their street theater performers and large puppets\, which are often used at protest actions\, and view climate visual art and performances meant to spark reflection\, discussion and action. Learn how to get involved in the climate justice movement as well as local environmental stewardship in the Bay Area with XR and other partner organizations.  \n\n\n\nSustainable Oakland will share how you can help the City of Oakland mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis in ways that improve racial equity across Oakland. The City’s 2030 Equitable Climate Action Plan seeks to transition all buildings in Oakland to 100% electric by 2040\, and residents are invited to shape how this will unfold. Meet the City’s Sustainability and Resilience team and discover how electrification improves home health and safety and what supportive services are available to help residents make the transition to an all-electric home.  \n\n\n\nEnjoy music by DJ Ron Reeser from 6 to 8 pm.  \n\n\n\nAbout the City’s Sustainability and Resilience Team\n\n\n\nThe team fosters collaboration with staff across all City Departments and with community leaders and experts on equitable climate change mitigation and adaptation.  \n\n\n\nAbout Extinction Rebellion (XR)\n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion\, or XR for short\, is a decentralized\, international and politically non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.  \n\n\n\nXR uses Nonviolent Direct Action (NVDA)\, otherwise known as civil disobedience\, to put pressure on the government to act on climate change. We see NVDA as the only remaining tactical option\, as our government has continuously failed at legal and conventional means to make the needed changes to avert mass catastrophe. Nonviolent action attracts attention to our movement\, disrupts business as usual\, and puts authorities in an ethical dilemma.  \n\n\n\nXR is a grassroots organization powered by regular people. We don’t believe that hierarchical structures of organization are a best practice in achieving our goals. Everyone is welcome!  \n\n\n\nXR San Francisco Bay Area works in small semi-autonomous groups\, which generally fall under two categories: affinity groups and working groups. \n\n\n\nAbout Friday Nights:\n\n\n\nReconnect with family\, friends\, and community at OMCA every Friday night. These free events provide a gathering place to come together each week\, including live music\, hands-on activities\, and Off the Grid food trucks.
