Welcome to the Dojo

Events and activities inside the exhibition RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom

By OMCA Staff

As the exhibition RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom (opening March 24, 2018) proves, Hip-Hop is more than just music—it’s a cultural movement with far-reaching effects and influences. So RESPECT wouldn’t be true to the spirit of Hip-Hop if the exhibition didn’t allow visitors to engage with Hip-Hop’s many aspects.

The Hip-Hop Dojo embodies the principle of “show, don’t tell.” In the Dojo, visitors can experiment, practice, and perform. To help visitors get in the right headspace, the gallery includes an immersive, multi-projector media environment featuring video artwork by Los Angeles-based DJ Mike Relm.

Other experiences in the Dojo include:

•  Learn the basics of Hip-Hop dancing by following along with experts projected on a screen
•  Perch on bleachers to hang out and watch others perform below
•  Play chess and other games that, like Hip-Hop, require discipline and skill
•  Try out the art of graffiti by adding your message to a wall of color and art
•  Get your hands on real mixing and beat-making equipment or try your hand at scratching.

Demonstrations, workshops, and cyphers will occur in the Dojo throughout the run of RESPECT, so every visit will be a new and distinctly Hip-Hop experience. Learn more about Dojo programs, and visit our Events calendar to see what's coming up.

RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom opens on Saturday, March 24, 2018.
