A Sneaker Wishlist

Which kicks we'd want under our tree

By Claudia Leung, Digital Communications Specialist

New exhibition Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture opens today, and we've got visions of, well, shoes, running through our heads. With the opening happening just in time for the holidays, we decided to make a good old-fashioned wish list. We asked several sneakerheads on the Oakland Museum of California staff what are their favorite shoes in the exhibition and why.

Rachael Aguirre, Project Manager, Exhibitions: It's really hard to choose! My favorite are the silver GE x Android Homme Missions. I love science fiction, and I know that they would make me feel like I was running down the streets of a dark, neon, dystopian city of the future.

Alex Jenney, Event Production Supervisor: My favorite pair have to be the White Cement 4s. I wanted a pair since I saw Buggin' Out get into the argument with the white "gentrifier" in the Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing. The profile and design of the shoe itself is beautiful, and that colorway is very clean and simple, but the history of the shoe and the nostalgia is really what makes it my all-time favorite.

Evelyn Orantes, Curator of Public Practice (and exhibition organizer): I'd totally go for the gold Christian Louboutin Roller-Boats. I love the red soles and that they're flashy but they're flat—I don't do heels. I just think they have a lot of personality and they're stylish—there's something fun about them.

Kenny Donaville, Production Technician: It'd be the Louis Vuitton Dons right here. They're awesome. I like them in the black colorway, but I like the tassels, which I've never seen before. They kinda look like a horsetail, pretty dope.

What's your favorite shoe in the exhibition? Let us know in the comments what sneakers you'd be most excited to get as a gift, and come see Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, during our special holiday hours.
