Our Five Favorite November Events

Support California Indian artisans, entertain your family when school’s on break, and more

By OMCA Staff

It’s officially Winter, right? Although this inconsistent weather makes it hard to tell in most parts of California, we know it’s getting real when everyone we know is talking about gifts and traditions for upcoming holidays. Mostly, this November we’re excited to share a full month of events with you from keeping your extended family entertained to supporting OMCA through Museum Store Sunday. Read on!

1. Indian Market at OMCA
It’s our fourth annual Indian Market at OMCA, featuring jewelry, baskets, prints, and other modern interpretations of Indian artistry. Come meet and support artisans from the California Indian community on Friday, November 3 from 3 to 9 pm and on Saturday, November 4 from 10 am to 4 pm. Stop by during your Friday Nights @ OMCA visit or make a day of it on Saturday! View the list of vendors here.

2. Friday Nights @ OMCA
Now that your family’s winter travel plans are solidifying, it’s time to make plans for how to keep them busy when they’re here! Entertain—and feed—them during Friday Nights @ OMCA (Fridays in November, 5–9 pm) with food trucks, live music and dancing, and late night access to our exhibitions in art, history, and science. We’re open on Friday, November 24, and, yes, we highly recommend getting everyone out of the house. (Here's your primer on what to do when you visit Nature's Gift: Humans, Friends & the Unknown.)

3. Days of the Dead Tours
Take a deep dive into our Days of the Dead exhibition, Metamorphosis & Migration, with a Docent-led tour on Saturday, November 4 and Saturday, November 18 at 12 pm (monthly on the first and third Saturdays through January 6). Learn more about the artists, altars, and practices from different cultures that explore traditions of remembrance. Tours are great conversation starters, and this exhibition might even spark some intergenerational sharing within your family!

4. Museum Store Sunday
We know that there’s a lot to choose from when you’re starting your holiday shopping, and that the week of Thanksgiving is when it all gets heavy. This year, consider supporting the OMCA Store on Sunday, November 26 as part of Museum Store Sunday, a nationwide campaign to support museums through their stores. Shop our California-centric gifts made by local artisans, our broad book selection with everything from art catalogs to cookbooks, and exhibition-themed favorites for all ages—and know that you’re helping OMCA while you do.

5. Bonus Bike Tour!
We’re happy to share that we rescheduled our African American History in Oakland Bike Tour in partnership with Walk Oakland, Bike Oakland (originally scheduled in October) to Sunday, November 15 at 10 am. Register today to save your spot, since this popular tour fills up—and don’t forget that OMCA Members register for free.
