Object of the Week: Question Bridge: Black Males

In this time of physical distance, Assistant Curator Rhonda Pagnozzi is reminded of how deeply interconnected we are to each other.

Every week, OMCA staff—from curators to gallery guides—reflect on an object from the Museum’s extensive collections that shares insights and inspiration for our present moment.

From Rhonda Pagnozzi, OMCA Assistant Curator

As we grapple with the uncertainties of this pandemic we are also experiencing what some are referring to as “The Great Pause.”

During this period of social distancing, when many of us are isolated from our networks of friends and family, some of us are reflecting on how vital these relationships are to our wellbeing. Our interdependence is emphasized when we see how our health depends on others taking these precautions. In this moment, I’ve been reminded of how deeply interconnected we are to one another.

In the spirit of connectedness, my Object of the Week is the video installation by artist Chris Johnson with Hank Willis Thomas, Question Bridge: Black Males. This moving piece intimately weaves conversations between black men from diverse backgrounds responding to important questions around themes of family, love, community, and wisdom. It is a beautiful portrayal of the interwoven fabric of our society.

It reminds me of a quote by Octavia E. Butler that I’ll leave you with: “All that you touch you change. All that you change, changes you.”
