Events to Kick Start Your New Year

What’s on our calendar in January

By OMCA Staff

Don’t you love that fresh feeling that comes with the start of a new year? We do, too, and here at the Oakland Museum of California our January is full of events and experiences you won’t want to miss.

1. Kick Off the Year with Friday Nights @ OMCA
On Friday, January 12, we’re back with our Winter Season of Friday Nights @ OMCA, bringing you late night gallery access, Off the Grid food trucks, music and dance, hands-on activities for kids, and more every Friday from 5 to 9 pm. Now through March, we’re extending our DJ sets to run the whole night, pausing only for your favorite dance lesson at 6:30 pm. Check out the full calendar

2. Cozy Up Inside OMCA with Our New Series
Looking for even more to do during Friday Nights @ OMCA? Watch out for our new Acoustic Space series, a monthly set of performance experiences that happen inside the OMCA galleries on January 19, February 16, and March 16. Our live music outdoors will resume every Friday evening starting on March 23 with the launch of our Summer Season—until then, we’re staying cozy in the galleries. Stay tuned for more details.

2. Don’t Miss the Final Weeks for Metamorphosis & Migration
Time is running out to check out our biennial Days of the Dead exhibition, Metamorphosis & Migration, which closes on Sunday, January 14. Inspired by the lifecycle of the Monarch Butterfly, known for its transgenerational mass migration each winter, this exhibition explores art and ofrendas (altars) that explore new and established traditions of remembrance and ritual.

3. Take Time to Reflect Inside Nature’s Gift
Carve out time for contemplation in the New Year while immersing yourself in the soft rainbow light of Nature’s Gift: Humans, Friends & the Unknown. Created exclusively for OMCA by artist collaborative FriendsWithYou, this contemporary art installation is a perfect spot to bring a friend and talk resolutions, intentions, and lessons learned last year while you lounge on hammocks or beanbags. But just like those resolutions, don’t wait to get started: Nature’s Gift closes on Sunday, January 21. Buy tickets online with promo code SHAREJOY before January 14 to save $2 on adult tickets.

4. It’s Time to Talk About Growing Food
Winter might seem like the least likely time to think about gardening, but many folks are already mentally plotting out their spring planting. Whether you have a cultivated green thumb or you’ve never picked a carrot, you might be surprised at how much food is actually being grown right here in Oakland. Our newest exhibition, Take Root: Oakland Grows Food, is a reminder that talking about growing food is always timely—and necessary, such that many of our neighbors work on it every day. Take your whole family to experience this hands-on exhibition, watch interviews with farmers and growers within the community, and find out why Oaklanders chose to grow food—including access to healthy and delicious ingredients, environmental and social justice values, or simply the joy of tending a garden.

5. Let the Bargain Hunting Begin at the White Elephant Preview Sale
Those who know and love the White Elephant Sale just might say the most wonderful time of year is actually late January. It’s the annual WES Preview Sale, taking place this year on Sunday, January 28 from 10 am to 4 pm. Enjoy early access to northern California’s biggest rummage sale while you shop for bargains, treasures, and more in this 96,000-square-foot warehouse. We know folks who save up all year to do their clothing shopping at this event. Believe us, it’s worth it. Buy tickets online early for this popular event and save!
