Annual Events

There are several OMCA events and community celebrations that happen every year and many of our visitors look forward to each year. Some of these events and celebrations inlcude:

February: Lunar New Year

OMCA celebrates the Lunar New Year and explores the shared connections between the diverse Asian cultures of the Bay Area. These family-friendly programs will include both virtual and in-person offerings that celebrate and honor Lunar New Year traditions through storytelling, performances, activities, cooking demonstrations, and more. OMCA holds space for our AAPI communities to come together and uplift each other with both in-person and virtual healing circles.

March and April: White Elephant Sale

Known as the best and biggest rummage sale in Northern California, Oakland’s beloved annual White Elephant Sale offers many opportunities to safely shop during the annual Bay Area tradition.

Featuring 19 departments with a wide range of quality goods, the White Elephant Sale proceeds directly benefit the Oakland Museum of California’s programming and exhibitions. The Sale is organized by the Oakland Museum Women’s Board, whose sole purpose has been to raise money to support OMCA since 1959.

More information on the annual sale is available at whiteelephantsale.org.

Ocotober and November: El Día de los Muertos

In collaboration with OMCA’s El Día de Muertos Volunteer Community Committee, we honor Day of the Dead every October and November.

For the past 28 years, we have transformed our campus into a sacred space for our annual community celebration each October. Stay tuned for this year’s celebration details, which will take place Sunday, October 23 from 12 to 4 pm.

Ofrenda (Altar) at OMCA

On view October 13–November 28, 2021
Located on the Lower Level near the entrance of the Gallery of California Natural Sciences

Join us to pay tribute to loved ones lost at a special ofrenda (altar) created by OMCA’s El Día de los Muertos Volunteer Community Committee. In remembrance of COVID-19 victims, the altar provides an opportunity to honor those whom we mourn in the community and to create personal offerings to add to the ofrenda.
