Join us for a special conversation honoring women in Hip-Hop with journalist and editor Danyel Smith and moderator Anita Johnson in celebration of Black History Music Month and special exhibition RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom. Danyel Smith was born and raised in Oakland, California. She is culture lead/senior editor at ESPN’s The Undefeated. A 2013–14 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, she has served as editor of Billboard, editor-at-large at Time Inc, and as editor-in-chief of VIBE in its classic era. Danyel is cofounder of HRDCVR, a design-centered hardcover media project created by diverse teams for a diverse world. She has written two novels, as well as nonfiction for ESPN The Magazine, the Guardian, NPR, CNN, Rolling Stone, Condé Nast Media Group, and The New York Times. Danyel lives in New York City and Washington DC.

Anita Johnson co-founded KPFA's Hard Knock Radio, a public affairs program, covering news, views and Hip-Hop. In 2009, with the assistance of The Association of Independents in Radio, she founded Beyond The Odds, a multimedia arts project created to illuminate the impact of HIV and AIDS on low-income and minority young adults. In 2010, she co-produced the documentary film CoInTelPro 101. Aside from her many journalistic achievements, she also is a well respected Hip-Hop MC and has performed alongside Verve recording artist Ledisi and the legendary singer/guitarist Carlos Santana.

DJ LadyRyan has been rocking crowds coast to coast for close to a decade. Her music and voice have been riding the wave of partygoers in major cities such as New York City, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Seattle and the nation's capital Washington D.C. LadyRyan was named a Best of the East Bay winner and a top DJ by Reader's Choice from the East Bay Express.
