Lunar New Year Celebration and Other Asian Traditions: Year of the Sheep

Don’t miss this favorite annual festival, as OMCA rings in the Year of the Sheep with an array of Asian traditions in arts, crafts, food, demonstrations, live music, dance, family activities, and so much more. Explore connections between the diverse Asian cultures represented in California, including Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, and other Asian cultures. Enjoy:

  • Chinese New Year orchestral music,
  • traditional opening and closing Lion and Dragon Dances,
  • artisanal demonstrations of Ikebana flower arranging, Japanese kites and handmade dolls, Korean wrapping cloths, Vietnamese spring roll-making, and decorated gourds,
  • hands-on activities, including Chinese calligraphy, red envelope lanterns, and dragon puppet-making,
  • Chinese Opera face painting and Henna body art,
  • drumming performances, including Korean drum dance, Japanese Taiko, and Malaysian 24 Festive Drum,
  • a fun and fuzzy petting zoo,
  • Garba, a style of Indian dance from Gujarat,
  • a magic show by The Magic of Jade, and plate spinning and contortion acrobatics by comedic performer Xia Kemin,
  • student groups performing K-pop dances and Chinese yo-yo tricks,
  • Vietnamese martial arts demonstration,
  • storytelling, including a special presentation by DEAF Media featuring both voice and sign language interpretation,
  • Asian fusion food trucks from Off the Grid and a special themed menu at the Blue Oak café,
  • and much more!

Parking and Transportation

Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation. OMCA is located one block north of the Lake Merritt BART station on Oak Street. If driving, visitors are encouraged to arrive early. Limited parking is available underneath the Museum in the OMCA Garage for a $5 flat fee. Hours for the OMCA garage are 7:30 am to 7 pm. Additional parking is also available at the ALCO Parking garage for a $5 flat fee at 165 13th Street at Jackson Street. Hours for ALCO Parking are 10 am to 6:30 pm.
