Wildlife Finds Homes Where Streams and Creeks Flow

Dozens of creeks once flowed freely from Oakland’s hills  down to the Bay. Their waters were home to many fishes.  Creek banks lined with water-loving trees sheltered birds, frogs, and other animals. Those creeks are still here  today–but they’re not easy to find. As Oakland grew,  many creeks were forced into culverts below city streets.

Bringing Back An Oakland Stream

Since 1996, Friends of Sausal Creek volunteers have worked to restore a stream that runs from Oakland’s hills through the flatlands and to the Bay. Community members, including Jayden Bassette (pictured above), have replaced invasive species with native seedlings, returning thriving habitats to many parts of Sausal Creek.

La Fauna Encuentra Su Hogar Donde Fluyen Arroyos y Riachuelos

Hace tiempo, decenas de arroyos fluían libremente  desde las colinas de Oakland hasta la bahía. Sus  aguas albergaban muchos peces. Las orillas de los  arroyos, bordeadas de árboles que viven en ambientes  húmedos, daban cobijo a pájaros, ranas y otros  animales. Esos arroyos siguen existiendo, pero no son  fáciles de encontrar. Con el crecimiento de la ciudad de  Oakland, muchos arroyos tuvieron que entubarse en las  alcantarillas bajo las calles de la ciudad. 

Recuperación de un Arroyo de Oakland

Desde 1996, voluntarios de Friends of Sausal Creek han venido trabajado para devolver a su estado natural un arroyo que va desde las colinas de Oakland hasta la bahía, pasando por las llanuras. Miembros de la comunidad, incluidos Jayden Bassette (en la foto), han sustituido especies invasoras por plántulas autóctonas, devolviendo hábitats prósperos a muchas partes del Sausal Creek.
