2007 marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of California College of the Arts (CCA). Long recognized as one of this country’s most respected art schools, CCA’s faculty and graduates played a pivotal role in the major developments of Twentieth Century art. The Bay Area Figurative Movement, Realism, and the rise of ceramics as a fine art medium are impossible to imagine without the influence of CCA. That influence continues to impact Contemporary art on a regional and national scale in such fields as conceptual photography and experimental video.

CCA’s mission to educate students to shape culture through the practice and critical study of the arts is realized through a broad curriculum in fine arts,

architecture, design and writing. The viewpoints of poets, photographers, designers, painters, furniture makers and other artists and craftspeople converge to form a vibrant artistic community that stretches far beyond the college itself.
Artists: Shalene Valenzuela and Ezra Li Ezmont. Photo: Michael Temperio.

The artists featured in this exhibition - former students in both the undergraduate and graduate programs over the last twenty years – reflect the creative diversity of the institution. From photography to ceramic sculpture, from the personal to the political, each of these artists is making his or her own contribution to the greater artistic voice of the Bay Area.
