OMCA Announces Details of May Reopening Celebrations for the Gallery of California Natural Sciences

(Oakland, CA) May 1, 2013—A weekend of events and celebrations from May 31 through June 2 will focus on California’s diverse and abundant natural wonders and humans’ interactions with them when the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) officially reopens its Gallery of California Natural Sciences to the public. The opening weekend marks the completion of a seven-year, $63 million transformation of OMCA’s building and the dynamic re-installation of its collections in California Art, History, and now Natural Sciences. Reopening celebrations start off with a private event for Gallery and capital campaign donors on Thursday and a preview for OMCA Members on Friday, May 31, from Noon to 7 pm. Friday Nights @ OMCA brings the animal-themed fun to another level, with a party from 5 pm to midnight. The reopening ceremony takes place at 7 pm, when the public will be invited to view the Gallery for the first time. Saturday, regular Museum hours include the closing celebrations for OMCA’s popular exhibition we/customize. The we/customize closing celebration continues on Free First Sundays, when the entire Museum will be open to the public free of charge. Throughout the Gallery of California Natural Sciences reopening weekend, visitors are invited to discover nature in the Golden State as never before, through the comprehensive and thoughtful reinstallation featuring interactive habitat installations, world-class dioramas, and emerging technologies.
