Oakland Museum of California Announces March/April 2014 Family Programs

(OAKLAND, CA)—The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) celebrates  springtime with new family-friendly activities in March and April, 2014. The popular evening series Friday Nights @ OMCA continues as it stays light out later, and always features delicious food trucks, live music, family hands-on activities, half-off admission for adults, and free admission for ages 18 and under! Sunday Family programs celebrate the season and connect to Natural Sciences, with bee hotel making, making dyes from native pigment, and flipbook-making, inspired by the new spring exhibition SuperAwesome! OMCA always offers great deals for families, with admission for youth ages 9 to 17 at $6. Children 8 and under visit for free!

Free First Sunday

Sunday, March 2, 2014, 11 am–5 pm

Enjoy films on the wonders of the Bay Area with Bay Motion: Capturing San Francisco Bay on Film and A Cinematic Study of Fog in San Francisco. Pick up a treat in the OMCA Store, or enjoy a lunch or snack in Blue Oak café. Explore all the galleries of the Museum—for free!

Friday Nights @ OMCA 

Fridays in March 2014, 5–9 pm

Join OMCA and Off the Grid on 10th Street every Friday for a taste of local music, food, art, and culture! Each Friday includes family-friendly drop-in workshops making shrink-dink necklaces from 5 to 8 pm! The last Friday of the month—March 28—includes story time with Oakland Public Library from 6 to 6:30 pm. Adults enjoy half-off Gallery admission and ages 18 and under are free!

OMCA Family Drop-in Workshop: Make a Bee Hotel

Get ready to welcome back the spring by making your very own bee hotel! Bee hotels are a great way to attract buzzy little pollinators to your garden and help jumpstart your flower or vegetable patch for the season. Included with Museum admission. No reservations required. All ages welcome.

OMCA Family Drop-in Workshop: Making Native Pigments from Nature

Sunday, March 23, 2014, 12–3 pm

People around the world have been using natural materials to create pigments as coloring agents since prehistoric times. In this drop-in workshop, learn how to make your own from common natural materials. Included with Museum admission. No reservations required. All ages welcome.

It’s Spring at OMCA! Come enjoy a free day: take a walk through the beautiful gardens or spend your day in the Galleries, taking in all there is to see. Enjoy special film programs Bay Motion: Capturing San Francisco Bay on Film, and A Cinematic Study of Fog in San Francisco.

Join OMCA and Off the Grid in February for a family-friendly fun and festivities! Enjoy DJs, live bands, dancing, and more. Play 49’er in the family-friendly drop-in activity ‘The Game of Gold’ every Friday from 5 to 8 pm. The last Friday of the month, April 25, also features story time with Oakland Public Library from 6 to 6:30 pm. Gallery admission is half-off for adults; free for ages 18 and under!

Sunday, April 27, 2014, 12–3 pm

When do art, illustration, animation, and storytelling intersect? In a flipbook! Come for this fun family-friendly drop-in to learn how to make your own, inspired by the exhibition SuperAwesome! Art and Giant Robot, on view in the Great Hall. Included with Museum admission. No reservations required. All ages welcome.
