There's power in numbers
|
Even after the community had a core group of neighbors working on Jungle Hill, we the Urban Spaces Interns continued to help them find new ways to bring people in. It's important to have a number of ways that people can get involved and enjoy themselves. That's the best way to attract people of all ages.

People are more likely to get involved if they see that their ideas are important. Our survey reached out to 171 neighbors of all ages and was conducted in four different languages English, Spanish, Cantonese and Vietnamese. We analyzed the results and discussed them at a community meeting.
Kids Club We helped neighbors start the Jungle Hill Kids Club. Every week or so we brought the kids together for games, snacks and community projects. We used Jungle Hill as a place to learn about nature, and we help kids do art activities such as drawing or pressing wildflowers. The Sierra Club's Inner City Outings program now organizes field trips for the Kids Club, thanks to a neighbor named Rachel Carr, who loves to take kids on outdoor adventures. Adult neighbors still organize activities for kids on Jungle Hill. Other websites to help jump-start community youth involvement: The Student Environmental Action Coalition

Work Days There's always lots of work to do on Jungle Hill picking up trash, weeding, planting, etc. Neighbors usually do the work, but on some occasions they are joined by groups like We Mean Clean, Project YES!, Americorps and the East Bay Conservation Corps. One organization, Oakland Parks and Recreation's "Earn Your Bike" program, got neighborhood kids involved in cleaning up the hill. In return for their 40 hours of community service, the kids received a bike, helmet and safety lessons.
