Digging In Deeper

After the surface and edges are plastered, the undercutting begins in earnest.

As more and more of the matrix below the fossil is removed to free it from the ground, wooden supports must be built up to keep the piece from collapsing.

Plastering continues over the lip and under the edge.

The goal is to completely cut away the piece of matrix containing the fossil bones from the underlying sediment. The crew works from both sides until they have tunneled all the way through.
