We travelled all the way to Monterey Bay to explore Elkhorn Slough Reserve by kayak. This estuary is a great place to view marine life, like harbor seals, sea otters and pelicans, up close. Ready for our adventure, we get pointers
about kayaking safety and technique.
Here are Laren and Thien paddling up the slough.
Sea otters are marine mammals that enter the slough to feed on clams and crabs.
From our kayaks we observed many sea otters feeding, resting,
and swimming.
The Moss Landing Marine Lab researchers have
trained two California sea lions to carry a videocamera and film
whales in the open ocean. They showed us how the sea lions get
exercise in their pools.
Chaz examines the videocamera the sea
lions carry on their back while out at sea.
At the end of the trip we
reviewed what we learned and saw. It was a fun trip.
