20th Anniversary Days of the Dead Community Celebration

The Oakland Museum of California is known for its annual Days of the Dead Community Celebrations, where the celebration of the mesoamerican tradition of Días de los Muertos comes alive in a colorful display of music, dance, art, family activities, and more.  Now in its 20th year, the celebration on Sunday, October 26, 2014 promises to be the most vibrant one yet, with annual favorites such as the artisanal mercado, community-created altars, hands-on art-making and food demonstrations, calavera face painting, and live performances of all kinds returning to the beautiful Museum gardens. The 20th anniversary Días de los Muertos exhibition, titled Songs and Sorrows, will also be on view in the Gallery of California Art, displaying a range of works that trace the history of the celebration from its pre-Hispanic origins to the contemporary artists and communities engaging with and evolving this tradition today.
